Germination of a Good Idea: The Push to Produce and Buy Locally Grown Food Sprouts in Rowan County
Area farmers, restaurateurs, chefs, health care representatives, elected and government officials, retailers, and a few who were just curious came together to discuss a program called FarmerFresh on March 30th at the Center for the Environment at Catawba College. Those attending hailed from Rowan, Cabarrus, Montgomery, Davidson, Stanly, Iredell and Davie counties. Campus Beautification Projects Planned for Catawba Cares Day
Volunteer Catawba will host a Catawba Cares Day on Saturday, April 10th. On that day, several different groups of faculty, staff, and student volunteers will work on beautification projects around campus. Planned projects include painting, mulching and planting flowers, with all materials and tools to be provided by the College.
Students in Catawba College Honor Society Attend Convention
Catawba College's chapter of Alpha Chi sent five student delegates to the Alpha Chi Super-Regional Convention in Little Rock, Arkansas, March 25-28. Dr. Bethany Sinnott, a professor of English at Catawba, accompanied the students as Faculty Sponsor.
Catawba College Faculty Member Receives Award
Michael Eden, an instructor of physical education and assistant athletic trainer at Catawba College, is the recipient of the N.C. Athletic Trainers Association Educator of the Year Award. Eden received the award March 6th at the annual NCATA Symposium.
Catawba Faculty and Students Attend Annual Meeting of Psychological Association
Faculty and students of the Catawba College Psychology Department attended the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Chattanooga, Tenn., March 10-13. Students attending included Lauren Graham of Salisbury, N.C., Andrea Clabaugh of York, Pa., and Tiffany Sowers of Asheville, N.C.; faculty included Drs. Lyn Boulter and Sheila Brownlow.
"You've Got to Want It," Blakley Leonard Says
An online Battle of the Bands contest might seem an odd way for a student to be introduced to the college he or she would eventually attend, but that is exactly what happened in the case of Blakley Leonard of Abingdon, Va. Blakley's band, The Calendar Effect, came in second place in the Young Guns 2008 Battle of the Bands national online competition that Catawba College coordinates and hosts. Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame Announces Four New Members
Four new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on May 1, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 32st anniversary. The inductees are (with graduation year): David Bennett of Conway, S.C.; Reid Bradshaw '67 of Salisbury; Kevin Sloan '88 of Havertown, Pa.; and Jowita Sokolowska '97 of Harelbeke, Belgium.
Lowe's Senior Vice President to Speak at Catawba College
Robert F. Wagner, Lowe's senior vice president of specialty sales and store operations support, will be the keynote speaker during Catawba College's Ralph W. Ketner School of Business' 5th Distinguished CEO Lecture Series on Thursday, April 8. Local Students Qualify for Regional Mathematics Contests
Local students were among the 124 students participating in the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contests that Catawba College hosted on Thursday, March 25, 2010. Tests in Algebra I and Geometry were administered by the Catawba College Mathematics Department and the top seven students in geometry and the top nine students in Algebra I qualified for the regional contests.

Catawba Presents Handel's Messiah
On Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., the combined choirs of Catawba College will perform George Frederick Handel's Messiah at Omwake Dearborn Chapel on the Catawba campus. The Catawba Singers, Catawba Chorale, Catawba Chamber Singers, and the vocal faculty of the College have worked since September to prepare this concert of Handel's revered oratorio.
Author Elizabeth Berg Shares the Stories behind Her Stories

Berg was speaker for the 24th Annual Brady Author's Symposium, held March 18 in Catawba College's Keppel Auditorium. Members of local book clubs, the Brady family, Catawba staff and residents from Rowan County and beyond enjoyed a luncheon afterward in the college's Peeler Crystal Lounge. Berg further shared insights at an informal Q&A session later in the afternoon.
Author and Architect Sarah Susanka Advises: "Be the Custodian of Your Own Life"
Author and architect Sarah Susanka brought her "Not So Big" philosophy to Catawba College's campus on March 16 and advised those members of her 11 a.m. audience to "be the custodian of your own life. We are that channel by which God moves through this world," Susanka explained, noting "those inner judgments [each person makes about themselves] undermine the truth of who God wants you to be."

Seventeen Ketner School of Business Students Inducted into Business Honor Society
Seventeen Catawba College seniors, all pursuing academic majors in the Ketner School of Business, were inducted into the Business Honor Society during a March 4 ceremony held at the Cloninger Guest House on campus. Membership in this scholastic honor society is open to all senior majors in the fields of accounting, economics, information systems, management and marketing who have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.
Rocky Mountain Institute Co-Founder Advocates Energy Revolution
He made it sound so easy. Catawba College welcomed Amory Lovins, one of the world's "top thinkers and environmentalists" and co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) based in Colorado, to Keppel Auditorium Feb. 23. Speaking to a crowd of more than 700, Lovins discussed doable ways to cut our dependence on oil. "It's not a fantasy," Lovins said. "It's available, practical and profitable now."
Catawba to Participate Exclusively in Direct Loan Program
We are pleased to announce that beginning with the Fall 2010 semester, Catawba College will participate in the William D. Ford Direct Loan program. Catawba College students will be required to use the Direct Loan program for all federal student and parent loans rather than the Federal Family Educational Loan Program program (FFELP). With the Direct Loan program, students and parents will apply directly with the federal government rather than having to go through a lender such as a bank.

2009-2010 N.C. Teacher of the Year Presents Her Vision of the 21st Century Classroom
Jessica Garner, the 2009-2010 N.C. Teacher of the Year, spent time on campus Thursday, February 25th with West Scholars and the Department of Teacher Education, sharing her vision of the 21st Century Classroom. Ms. Garner is a Spanish teacher at Porter Ridge High School and is a resident of Indian Trail, N.C.
Catawba Helps Students Hone Their Life Skills

Wise words from an undergraduate who attended Catawba College's Life-Skills 101 series on Feb. 18-19 in the Hurley Room on campus. The first night focused on personal finance, with the second night centered around alumni networking and dining and business etiquette.
