Two individuals associated with Catawba College were honored as recipients of Paul Fisher Service Awards. Mr. Paul Fisher, chairman of the Catawba College Board of Trustees and the person for whom the awards are named, made the presentations to Catawba professor of history, Dr. Charles McAllister, and Catawba student, Amber Hughes of Seattle, Wash.

Fisher, who serves as chairman of the board of F&M Bank, set an example for volunteerism through is own life and his bank makes possible these awards as a way of honoring him and encouraging others to follow his example. The awards are presented annually through Volunteer Catawba.

Dr. Charles McAllister has spent more than two decades as a member of the Catawba College faculty and has been named "Teacher of the Year" on several occasions. During his tenure, he has been an active participant in community causes and has encouraged his students to follow his example. He has modeled the importance of volunteerism by working alongside students gleaning tomato fields for produce to be used in shelters and food kitchens, and by participating in clean-up campaigns. He has traveled throughout the nationa providing referee training for volleyball officials and has served as a scholar for the N.C. Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Closer to home, he is active in supporting his wife’s work with the Humane Society of Davie County.

Amber Hughes, a Catawba senior and honors student, was recognized for volunteering in many capacities during her collegiate career. Active in the theatre and a number of student organizations, she has also served as a member of the Retreat Leadership Corps and in that capacity has helped plan and lead a number of spiritual growth, leadership and freshmen retreats. She has also been responsible for putting together dramatic presentations for Campus Worship services. In the recent past, she worked with others in Volunteer Catawba to spearhead a campaign to raise funds on campus to benefit  victims of the Haitian earthquake.

In making the presentations to McAllister and Hughes, Mr. Fisher thanked them both "for being a servant leader" and cited them as "our hope for a troubled world."
