Catawba College's renovation of and addition to its Cannon Student Center were recognized Feb. 18 at a 2010 Awards Luncheon hosted by the Salisbury Community Appearance Commission (SCAC). The College received the Commission's 2010 award for Best Building Addition and Renovation in recognition of the contributions to the community that this renovation and addition provided.
Barbara Perry, chair of the SCAC, made the presentation to Catawba representative Tonia Black-Gold, Communications Officer. Other awards made at the luncheon held at the Rowan Museum recognized the best of New Building, Downtown Building Renovation, Adaptive Re-Use, Site Improvements and Signage. The SCAC Awards Jury was comprised of five members: Jeanne Johnston, the City of Lexington, N.C.'s Community Development Coordinator; Lee McLaren, FASLA, DPR Associates of Charlotte; Perry Peterson, AIA, Peterson/Gordon Architects; Sharon Richmond, ASLA, the Town of Kernersville, N.C.'s Senior Planner; and Barbara Perry.
Work on the 7,000 square foot addition to the Cannon Student Center was completed in June of 2008 and marked the end of a multi-year facilities improvement effort at Catawba that began during the summer of 2006. The addition, off the back west wing of the facility, is home to the campus post office, the Lerner Wellness Center, the Hurley Room, an executive dining area, and a small kitchenette. In tandem with this addition, the dining hall on the lower level of the Student Center was reconfigured to create more intimate, less institutional, dining space.
Other renovation work in the Cannon Student Center included revamping the wing which houses the Student Affairs offices, enclosing and updating a small, private meeting space called Adams Loft, expansion and new cosmetic finishes to the College bookstore, refurbishment of Leonard Lounge, a large common space, and refurbishment of a fast-food dining area.
Summit Developers, Inc. of Salisbury served as general contractor for the Cannon Student Center addition and renovations, while Lawler Wood of Knoxville, Tenn., served as project manager.
