The Catawba College Music Department will host a free  Horn-Brass Workshop with Frank Portone between 4 and 5:15 p.m. Friday, January 22 in the lobby of Hoke Hall on campus. Portone, principal horn of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for the past 28 seasons and a teacher of horn, will conduct the workshop.

Portone will share insights with workshop participants on horn and brass performance, including warm-ups, embouchure, breathing and technical issues. He will also critique horn performances, both solo and in ensemble, and offer a sample performance of Paul Dukas's Villanelle, accompanied by Dr.  Robert Hallquist, an adjunct music faculty member at Catawba.

In addition to his work with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra where he has been a featured soloist, Portone has been active in the realm of chamber music. He has performed in the noontime chamber music concerts offered at St. Peter's Church and in the chamber music series offered at Providence United Methodist Church. Since 1981, he has been a member of the well known and sought after Carolina Brass quintet, which he now manages.

Portone is an adjunct faculty member at Davidson College, where he has taught for 28 years. He has taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in recent years, offered master classes, and has private students whom he instructs in horn.

Prior to coming to Charlotte, Portone was principal horn of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 1977 to 1980. While in Hong Kong, he played over 300 recording sessions, performed chamber music, and taught horn privately at Hong Kong Catholic University and Hong Kong Conservatory of Music.

Portone has studied with John Salmonella and Kendall Betts, members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and earned his bachelor of music degree in horn performance from Temple University.
