College to Resume Normal Schedule on February 2, 2010
January 31, 2010 - After reviewing the local weather conditions and Rowan County's Emergency Management team announcements, College officials have determined that the college will be closed on Monday. All classes in both the day and evening program are cancelled. Resident students should be aware that the college dining hall will continue to be open and available during normal operating hours. Please be advised that the snack bar may be closed if necessary so the focus can be on providing servic
"The Wind in the Willows" Plays at Catawba College Feb. 9-13
Theatergoers of all ages will delight in Catawba College's upcoming production of "The Wind in the Willows" which plays in Catawba College's Hedrick Theatre Feb. 9-13. Alan Bennett's fun adaptation of Kenneth Graham's classic tale and will transport Catawba audiences to a timeless, magical world full of adventure, symbolism, and camaraderie. Come watch as Mole, Rat, Badger, and Mr. Toad travel the open road, the riverside, and the ominous Wild Wood.

After the Rains, Softball Team Pitches in to Help
January's torrential rains caused major flooding from Grant's Creek onto Catawba's athletic complex, including Whitley Softball Field and Frock Fields. To get the fields in shape for play, members of Catawba's Softball Team spent most of their free time during the week of January 25 on the field, not playing, but cleaning up.

"Not So Big Life" Author Sarah Susanka to Speak at Catawba College March 16th
Author and architect Sarah Susanka, who developed her philosophy of "Not So Big" into a series of best-selling books, will be the keynote speaker for Catawba College's seventh annual Lilly Colloquium on Tuesday, March 16. Susanka's visit to campus is sponsored by Catawba's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values and the Center for the Environment.

Our very generous host really just acted as a chauffeur to and from, and we were all very grateful for the freedom it provided. I can personally say that I was grateful for the continental breakfast. It was an obnoxiously early breakfast, but it was still breakfast.
'84 Alumnus Running for Congressional Seat
Catawba College Alumnus Scott Robinson '84 of Tappahannock, Va., has entered the race as a Democrat for his state's First Congressional District. His campaign focus is to bring accountability to federal government and he is committed to balancing the federal budget and promoting pro-growth economic policies. He is an environmental steward and an advocate for veterans, especially wounded soldiers.
2010 Hall of Fame to Induct Four New Members
The 2010 Class to be inducted on Saturday, May 1st includes Reid Bradshaw '67 (Football and former Head Coach and AD at South Rowan HS), David Bennett (Head Football Coach here 1995-2001), Kevin Sloan '88 (Soccer) and Jowita Sokolowska '97 (Women's Basketball).
Kids Invited to "Princess Party" at Catawba College
The Delphinian Society, a female service organization at Catawba College, will host a Princess Party on beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7 in the Cannon Student Center on campus. The event, geared to young children, ages 3-12, will feature four princesses: Cinderella, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
Two Catawba Grads and a Professor Have Paper Accepted for Publication
Dr. Sheila Brownlow, a professor of psychology at Catawba College, and two of her former students, Jessica Davison of Springfield, Pa., and Danielle Schneider of New Castle, Del., both 2009 graduates, co-authored a paper that has been accepted for publication by the Psi Chi Journal.

Students Asked to Focus on Who They Were and Are at Convocation
Some members of the Catawba College community brought a high school photo of themselves as they gathered in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel for the spring semester Opening Convocation on Thursday, January 21. The Office of the Provost had sent out an e-mail in advance requesting that faculty, staff and students bring such an image, and many wondered why.

Catawba Singers Offer Home Concert to Cap 2010 Tour of Mid-Atlantic States
The Catawba College Singers and the Catawba Chamber Singers will offer a free home concert to cap their 2010 Mid-Atlantic States Tour at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The Singers will be conducted by Associate Professor and Director of Vocal Choral and Sacred Music Studies Paul E. Oakley, and accompanied on the piano by Dr. Robert Hallquist, instructor of piano and choral accompanist.

I even discussed with my host for that previous night the possibility of adding onions to his recipe for a little something special. I could tell from there it was going to be a good day for America, or at least me. It turned out it was Kris Watson's birthday, which I learned as we all met at the church later that morning before our departure.

The Brady Investment

Gift of Music from Catawba Alumni Thrills Holy Angels

Sounds showering the air may be like the sweet purr of a harp or a full orchestra's blast. The players are residents of Belmont-based Holy Angels, a center for children and adults with severe disabilities that is run by the Sisters of Mercy.
Update on Catawba's Commitment to Climate Neutrality
Much has been going on behind the scenes since June of 2007 when Catawba College joined close to 300 other colleges and universities nationwide in supporting the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Today, Catawba submitted its completed Climate Action Plan to the ACUPCC.
Lexington, N.C. Family to Appear in Jan. 31st "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"
A Lexington, N.C., family with three children who have a chance to go to college thanks to Catawba College and Davidson County Community College will be featured on a Sunday, January 31st episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (EMHE). That episode, featuring William and Tricia Creasy of Lexington, their twins Makenzie and Makayla, age five, and their oldest child, Britanny, age 12, airs 8-9 p.m. ET on ABC.
Catawba Gets New Energy Star Rated Vending Machines
New contracts with both a soft drink vendor and a snack foods vendor have resulted in new Energy Star rated machines on campus at Catawba College. The new contracts, with Pepsi for soft drinks and Executive Vending for snacks, went into effect January 1st.

Catawba College to Host Free Horn-Brass Workshop Jan. 22nd
The Catawba College Music Department will host a free Horn-Brass Workshop with Frank Portone between 4 and 5:15 p.m. Friday, January 22 in the lobby of Hoke Hall on campus. Portone, principal horn of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for the past 28 seasons and a teacher of horn, will conduct the workshop.

Lecturer Explains North Carolina Barbecue Traditions for Tourists

Catawba College senior Nathaniel Griffin of Boomer, N.C., has been selected to receive the American Chemical Society's (ACS) 2010 Student Leadership Award. The award will be presented to Griffin at the 2010 ACS Leadership Institute to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, January 22-24.

Lisa Easter admits she is on the fast track. She is a 20-year-old Catawba College senior, majoring in music business, and she has already released her first full-length album, "Welcome to My World," and spent a summer working on Warped Tour.
Catawba's January Forum: The Role of South Carolinians during the Civil War
James W. Gettys, currently Professor Emeritus of History at Erskine College, has spent a lifetime studying the history of southern soldiery. His doctoral dissertation at the University of South Carolina looked at South Carolina's role in the Mexican War, and his earlier Masters Thesis was entitled Mobilization for Secession in the Greenville District. Before his retirement in 2008, he held a number of posts at Erskine, including Dean of Admissions, and Vice President and Dean of the College.
'80 Alumna and Spouse Sail Around the World
You might remember the movie, "Around the World in 80 Days." Tina Costino Jones '80 and husband Braun are taking a dozen or so years to circumnavigate the globe. A decade ago, the couple bought a Nordhavn motor yacht. The 62-foot craft is designed and built for worldwide cruising. That's exactly what the couple has used it for. Catawba College Receives Foundation Grant
Source: SalisburyPost.com. The Salisbury Community Foundation recently distributed grants totaling $72,690 to local nonprofit agencies. The 2009 grants are given in memory and in appreciation of Christine P. Whitton, board chair of the Salisbury Community Foundation until August 2009. "We remember her dedication and commitment to the quality of life and to the citizens of our community," the foundation said in a press release.

Film about Food & How It's Grown to be Shown at Center for Environment Facility
The documentary FRESH, dubbed "a fresh look at food production," will be shown at the Center for the Environment facility on the Catawba College campus at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28. The screening, co-sponsored by the Center, Bread Riot and Wild Turkey Farms, offers a positive message about small farms and local food.
