    Catawba Singers Make 2010 Tour of Mid-Atlantic States

    The Catawba College Singers will make their 2010 Tour of the Mid-Atlantic States January 7 through 14. The Singers, under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Vocal Choral and Sacred Music Studies Paul E. Oakley, plan performance stops in Frederick, Md.; Washington, D.C.; Lancaster, Pa.; Easton, Md.; and Raleigh, N.C.

    'One of Western World's Most Influential Energy Thinkers' to Speak at Center for Environment

    Rocky Mountain Institute's cofounder — a scientist Time magazine recently called "one of the world's 100 most influential people" — will speak at Catawba College on Tuesday, February 23. The Wall Street Journal named Amory Lovins, RMI's chairman and chief scientist, one of 39 people worldwide "most likely to change the course of business in the '90s," and Newsweek called him "one of the Western world's most influential energy thinkers."

    Owner of Popular Catawba Student Hangout Dies

    By Mark Wineka, salisburypost.com. Al Boulus, whose Al's Night Hawk restaurant represented a rite of passage for many Salisburians, died Tuesday, December 8 at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Boulus, 86, retired from the restaurant business in 2001 after 51 years and three locations on West Innes Street.

    Catawba Professor Awarded Regional Artist Project Grant

    Dr. Janice Fuller, Writer-in-Residence and Professor of English at Catawba College, has been awarded a Regional Artist Project Grant by the Arts & Science Council. The funding is made possible through North Carolina Arts Council, the Blumenthal Endowment, and the Arts Councils of Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford and York (SC) counties. A panel from the ASC reviewed 67 applications and selected only 20 recipients.

    Springsteen Backup Vocalist Sings at Catawba

It's a Saturday afternoon in November, and I find myself in the luxurious Cloninger Guest House at Catawba College, listening to a woman sing and play piano. This isn't just any woman; and this isn't just any song. This is Lisa Lowell, playing one of her original songs for me. Lowell is a professional background singer who has performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, B.B. King, Sheryl Crowe, Stevie Wonder and many others.

    National Education Consultant Larry Bell Pumps Up Prospective Teachers

    "Kids don't care how much we know until they know how much you care," Larry Bell asserted and then added, "and when they know, 'it's on.' " Bell, a national education consultant and motivational speaker, spoke to a capacity audience of prospective teachers, current teachers and area educators at Catawba College's Tom Smith Auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 3rd. His message was delivered with good humor, laughter and plenty of audience participation.
