Upcoming Green Pig Initiatives
Several Green Pig Initiatives will be happening on campus to heighten awareness of the fact that there is a statewide ban on the acceptance of plastic bottles at landfills. As of October 1, plastic bottles, oil filters and wooden pallets are a no-go at N.C. landfills. These items will have to be recycled and cannot be included in regular household or bagged garbage.
Catawba College Receives Grant for Epifluorescence Microscope
Thanks to a $48,804 grant that Catawba College received from the N.C. Biotechnology Research, science students now have access to a new Epifluorescence Microscope. The new microscope was installed in the Shuford Science Building on campus in late August, replacing one that was almost 20 years old.
Catawba College Student Receives Research Stipend
A Catawba College student has received a $1,000 research stipend from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) to perform research. Only five research stipends were awarded throughout the state by the NCICU.
Hot Off the Grill Was a Hot "Take Your Parents to Class" Session during Catawba's Family Weekend
"I wasn't sure how many people would show up for "Take Your Parents to Class" on Friday [September 25th]," says Cyndi Allison Wittum, a Catawba College Communication Arts Instructor. "It's hard to compete with football games and ice cream socials when you're offering a class lecture."
New Yamaha Keyboard Lab Installed at Catawba College
Faculty and staff in Catawba College Music Department are still celebrating a new Yamaha keyboard laboratory recently installed by department members in Hoke Hall on campus. The lab, which includes a teacher station, audio hardware, lab peripherals and software, plus 16 student stations, will further integrate technology into the music curriculum offered to Catawba students.

Mathematics Honor Society Installed at Catawba College
The Catawba College Department of Mathematics installed a new chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national undergraduate honor society for the advancement of mathematics, during a ceremony held in Tom Smith Auditorium on campus Thursday, Sept. 17.

Catawba Singers to Perform at N.C. State Convention of American Choral Directors
The Catawba Singers will perform in a concert for the N.C. State Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18th. The concert will be offered in the Recital Hall at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In playwright Clare Boothe Luce's world of money, the action of these rich socialites centers on men… without a single man ever appearing on stage. Director of the Center for the Environment: Sewage Spill Could Result in Fish Kill
By Roxanna Haynes, FOX8 News: HIGH ROCK LAKE, N.C. - An environmental expert believes the nearly 16 million gallons of sewage dumped into a creek that feeds into High Rock Lake could lead to a fish kill, among other effects.The city of Thomasville could face a massive fine from the federal government for the sewage leak, which occurred between July 13 and August 4.
The 14th Annual Catawba 100 Golf Marathon is Played at McCanless
18 golfers teed off at 7:30 on Monday, September 14th to play 100 holes at McCanless Golf Club to support Catawba Athletics. Included in the group were several Catawba coaches. All monies raised in the effort are spent on Catawba Student Athletes.
Catawba Faculty and Alumni Continue Work on "As I Lay Dying" Adaptation
Four Catawba College theatre arts alumni recently participated in a reading of a stage adaptation of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying at Ragdale, an artist colony in Lake Forest, Illinois. Members of the Catawba College community commemorated the anniversary of September 11, 2001 at a Campus Worship service held Tues., Sept. 8 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. Loose Change Collected at Catawba's Home Athletic Events Will Benefit Local Charities
Loose change collected at the entrances of Catawba College's home athletic events will benefit several charities, including Rowan Helping Ministries, the American Red Cross and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Student athletes, representing Catawba's 18 athletic teams, will be responsible for the collection in an effort led by Catawba's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Rowan County Chief Deputy Kevin Auten jokes about how long he was an undergraduate at Catawba College before earning his bachelor's degree in 2000. He'll tell you about his false starts, that college is a balance of grades, maturing and experience, and how all it takes is for you to apply yourself, but it took Kevin Auten a total of 21 years to get it exactly right for himself.

The Immortal Lovers: Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning - Dr. W. Craig Turner, the current president of Catawba College, developed his love of English literature as an undergraduate at Baylor University. After completing a B.A. in English and History at Baylor, he remained in Waco long enough to earn an M.A. in English before moving on to finish his Ph.D. in British and American Literature at Tulane University.
