After averaging 157.6 yards passing while playing in eight games last season at North Carolina, quarterback Cam Sexton will be taking the snaps this season under center for Catawba in hopes of landing a job in the NFL.
SALISBURY. Cameron Sexton didn't expect to be here.
Not at Catawba College, as the quarterback of a Division II team after four years at North Carolina, where he earned his degree in May with one year of eligibility remaining.
Coming out of Scotland High in 2004, Sexton chose North Carolina over Florida State and a late-arriving South Carolina, imagining many things.
But not this.
"Situations come up and you've gotta do what you've gotta do sometimes," Sexton says, waiting for practice.
In Sexton's case, that meant finding a place to play now. Since he was a kid, he has been single-minded about his future. He wants to play in the NFL and, though others doubt him, Sexton – 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds – is resolute in his belief he can be a pro quarterback.
When it became clear late last season that he likely would be a back-up to quarterback T.J. Yates at North Carolina this year, he decided to move on.
