    Retired Plastic Surgeon Talks Ethics

    When retired plastic surgeon and Catawba College alumnus Verne Lanier '62 of Durham visited campus last spring, he came to talk ethics. The students who listened to his presentation came away with some valuable advice and with a little more insight into how complicated making ethical decisions can be.

    Academic Departments Form Schools at Catawba College

    The academic structure at Catawba College is changing. In addition to different academic departments headed by chairs, academic departments will now be affiliated with five different schools, each headed by a dean. Overseeing the five schools and serving as the institution's chief academic officer is Provost Dr. Rick Stephens who joined the College in January.

    Catawba Recycles Geothermal Runoff to Cut Water Use

    In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars, by Kevin Sites, has been chosen as the Common Summer Reading for 2009. The book details journalist Kevin Sites's travels through 20 distinct world conflicts from 2005-2006, during which time he was the war correspondent for Yahoo.com.

    Catawba College Presidential Honor Roll Announced

    A total of 120 students have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2008-2009 academic year at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College.     Catawba College Donates Land to the City of Salisbury

    Catawba College has donated a 2.1-acre parcel off Hawkins Avenue to the city of Salisbury. Hawkins Avenue is located off Hawkinstown Road, and the donated property sits along Grants Creek. The city already was maintaining a right of way through the property. Salisbury Planning Director Joe Morris said the property lies within a proposed Salisbury Greenway corridor that could some day link Mocksville Avenue with 7th Street in Spencer.

    Independent Film 'Sway' Shooting at Catawba and in Salisbury

    by Seth Leonard, The Salisbury Post Salisbury will be the backdrop for a new independent film featuring local students and landmarks. Catawba College will play host to half of the feature, while the rest will be shot in Nashville, Tenn. The movie, "Sway," will be a full-length feature, scripted as a musical with dance and drama. The plot is centered around dance major Emma Mitchell, played by Sarah LeJeune, her struggles with life and the curveballs it can throw.

    Center for Environment Receives Grant from Robertson Foundation

    The Center for the Environment at Catawba College has received a $25,000 grant from the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation for the Center's Clean Air Initiative. The Robertson Foundation funds will be used to assist the Center in meeting the matching requirements for its CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality) grant with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

    Catawba Student Tapped as Undergrad Scientist at NC Biotech Center

    Source: www.ncbiotech.org - Undergraduates at 15 North Carolina schools have won competitive grants for life-science research. The Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award program was unveiled this year by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. It brings to 19 the number of grant and loan programs administered by the Center to support education, research, commercialization and company development.

    Catawba College Dean's List Announced

    263 Students Graduate during Catawba College Commencement Exercises

    Catawba College President Craig Turner both congratulated and issued a challenge to the graduating seniors in the class of 2009. His remarks came in the form of a charge to the Catawba's 263 graduates during a 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremony held Saturday, May 9th in Keppel Auditorium on campus.

    Catawba Alumnus and Three Graduating Seniors Recognized during College's Commencement Exercises

    Catawba College Alumnus Patrick L. McCrory '78, the current mayor of the City of Charlotte, and three graduating seniors, Jill Archambault of Glens Falls, N.Y.; Jared Kenish of Glassboro, N.J.; and Richard Kolbasowski, Jr., of Rockwell, N.C.; received special recognition during the College's May 9th Commencement Exercises.

    Three 2009 Catawba College Graduates Recognized with Awards

    Three Catawba College graduates were recognized during Commencement Exercises on campus for academic excellence. Two were honored as the Whitener Award recipients during the 10 a.m. ceremony, while one student was honored as the Barbara Andrews Award recipient during the 2 p.m.

    Pat McCrory Honored with O.B. Michael Award

    Patrick L. McCrory, who is currently serving his seventh term as Mayor of the City of Charlotte, was honored by the College during the 10 a.m. commencement exercise with the 2009 O.B. Michael Award. This award has been presented annually since 1938, by the Catawba College Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, to a graduate of the College who has made an outstanding contribution...

    Retiring Faculty Share Thoughts on Their Time at Catawba

    Two retiring members of Catawba College's faculty were recognized at commencement exercises held in Keppel Auditorium on Saturday, May 9th. Dr. Andrew A. Vance, Jr., a professor of modern foreign languages and business law, and Dr. Patricia Whitley, professor of Physical Education and Recreation, both retired from the College after a combined 88 years of service, effective May 31, 2009.

    Catawba Grads Urged to Embrace the Presence of the Holy

    Catawba College's graduating seniors were told to look inside themselves if they want to find "the Holy and the Sacred." That advice was from College Professor Emeritus of Religion and Philosophy, Dr. J. Daniel Brown, and it was dispensed at the annual Baccalaureate Service held May 8th in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel in campus.

    Catawba College Honor Society Installs Officers and Inducts New Members

    Catawba College's Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor scholarship society, installed new officers and initiated new members during a May 8th ceremony. Homilist for the ceremony was Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English.

    Catawba College Lecturer Fires Up the Grill for "Consumers Digest"

    "I thought perhaps a friend was playing a joke," says Cyndi Allison Wittum, a Catawba College Communication Arts lecturer. "It's not typical for an editor from a national magazine to send an e-mail about covering an assignment, especially when you've never written for the magazine."

    New Members Inducted into Tri-Beta Honor Society at Catawba College

    The Catawba College Chapter of Beta Beta Beta, the national biology honor society, inducted 13 new members at its annual induction ceremony of April 22, 2009. The ceremony was conducted by president Rachel Roberts of Knoxville, Tenn.; vice-president Kyle Ganow of State College, Pa.; secretary Katrina Pergerson of Spring Lake, N.C.; and faculty advisor Dr. Steve Coggin.
