    Catawba Conservation Camp Open to Rising 6th and 7th Grade Girls

    Rising sixth or seventh grade girls interested in the environmental sciences are invited to make application to attend the Catawba Conservation Camp (C3). The camp is open to girls who are enrolled in public or private school or who are home schooled in Rowan, Cabarrus, Iredell, Davie, Davidson and Stanly counties

    Catawba Welcomes New V.P. of Enrollment

    Stressing the value of a private college education is important, Catawba College's new Vice President of Enrollment Lois Williams says. "Catawba is a gem of a school. It has dedicated faculty and staff and great facilities. This type of educational experience is truly transformative."

    Author and News Correspondent Jim Wooten to Speak at Catawba on March 24th

    Lilly Colloquium Speaker: "Greatest Crisis in America Today is Crisis of Masculinity"

    "The greatest crisis in America today is the crisis of masculinity," Catawba College's 2009 Lilly Colloquium speaker Joe Ehrmann told the audience gathered for his 11 a.m. address on February 24th in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. "Right behind that is the crisis of femininity and womanhood," he continued. Ehrmann, the guest speaker for the sixth annual Lilly Colloquium, is a former NFL Pro who played for 13 years for the Baltimore Colts.

    Catawba College Students Present Research at Southeastern Psychological Association Meeting

    Catawba College psychology professor, Dr. Sheila Brownlow, and several of her students traveled to the 55th annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association held Feb. 18-21 in New Orleans, La. While there, the student presented peer-reviewed research in interactive poster sessions.

    Catawba College Professor Speaks at Conference

    Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor of political science at Catawba College, was a lecturer at the 2009 Florida Chautauqua Assembly. The theme of the assembly this year was "A Journey into Africa." Dr. Silverburg offered three different lectures at the multi-day event: "Africa in World Politics Today," "U.S. Policy towards Africa Today," and "Why Africa is Important to Us."

    Catawba College's ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Is Finalist

    Catawba College's American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Affiliates Chapter was selected as one of the four finalists for the National Chemistry Week 2008 Chemvention competition. The chapter's entry was selected based on its level of originality, creativity and the coherent manner in which it was presented. As a finalist, the chapter was awarded a $1000 check to be used toward travel to an ACS national meeting.

    Catawba College Professor Contributes to "Best Textbook/Primer in Popular and American Culture in 2008"

    Dr. J. Michael Bitzer, an associate professor of political science at Catawba College, had no idea that the textbook to which he recently contributed a chapter would be selected as the best textbook/primer in popular and American culture in 2008.

    Lincoln Portrait Donated to Catawba College

    An oil painting of President Abraham Lincoln made a circuitous route across that country before arriving at its new home at Catawba College. The painting, given to Catawba by Salisbury newcomers Rodger and Mary Lindsay, was officially unveiled Feb. 17 during a college trustees' luncheon held in the Corriher-Linn-Black Library on campus.

    Catawba's President Shares Seven College Initiatives with Trustees

    The day after he was officially installed as Catawba College's 21st President, Dr. Craig Turner shared with college trustees seven initiatives which would chart the course of the institution's future. The setting was the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees held Tuesday, February 16 in the Hurley Room on campus.

    Catawba's New President Stresses Teamwork during His Installation Address

    When Catawba College's 21st President, Dr. W. Craig Turner, made remarks during his installation ceremony on President's Day, Monday, February 16, 2009, he spoke of teamwork. "Great teams," he said, "build great institutions." Turner then expanded on some of the positive attributes of good teams.

    Catawba College Mathematics Department to Sponsor Annual Contests

    Catawba College's Mathematics Department will be sponsoring the seventh annual North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics Contests on Thursday, March 26, 2009. Catawba College will be a qualifying site for the Algebra I and Geometry contests.

    Blue-White Weekend Set for April 3-4, 2009

    Our annual Blue-White Weekend is scheduled for Friday night, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th, 2009. The weekend starts with Corey Fischer and his most capable Chartwells Food Service staff. They will man four stations around the Michael Meeting Room. Each will be 15 minutes in length and will feature recipe and presentation ideas as well as sampling at each station.

    Catawba's Blue Masque Presents "Electra"

    The grounds of ancient Greece will shake with impending justice when the Catawba College's Blue Masque presents "Electra." The production runs from February 25th to the 28th in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus. "Electra," written by Sophocles and translated by acclaimed poet and scholar Anne Carson, tells the story of a young woman's struggle with passion and rage as she seeks to restore honor to the tarnished house of her murdered father.

    New York Times bestsellers list author Chris Bohjalian will be keynote speaker at Catawba College's 23rd annual Brady Author's Symposium on Thursday, March 26. Bohjalian's newest novel, "Skeletons at the Feast," comes out in paperback this month.

    "Little Rock," Is a Dramatic Reflection of a Dream, a Goal, Their Story

    An entire year of protests, a governor on the fence about right and wrong, and nine black honor students at the center of it all. This original play, "Little Rock: Our Dreams. Our Goals. Their Story," written and directed by junior theatre arts major Tony Mullins of Charlotte, will open with a 7 p.m. curtain on Thursday, Feb. 19 in Hedrick Little Theatre at Catawba College.

    Catawba Students Plan Activities to Celebrate Black History Month

    Catawba College's Diversity Club has planned some activities in celebration of Black History Month. These activities include two programs that are open to members of the Rowan-Salisbury community. A free showing of "The Great Debators," starring Denzel Washington, kicks off the month. The movie will be shown beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Tom Smith Auditorium and refreshments will be provided. This event is open only to members of the Catawba College community.

    College Financial Aid Help Available at 65 Locations Across North Carolina on Saturday, February 21st

    College financial aid officers will be available at 65 locations across North Carolina on Saturday, February 21 from 9 a.m. until noon, including at Catawba College in Salisbury, to help high school seniors and families complete and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. The FAFSA is required to be considered for all federal and most state financial aid, including scholarships and grants, for college.

    College Hopes to Win RecycleMania 2009 Competition

    Catawba College is one of 510 colleges and universities participating in RecycleMania 2009, a friendly competition which pits colleges and universities in a nationwide contest to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most campus waste.
