The major renovations on Catawba College’s campus have been concluded and only construction of a new addition on the Cannon Student Center remains to be completed. Officials anticipate work on the 7,000 square foot addition will wrap-up in June.

Major renovations on campus included an overall space makeover of the Corriher-Linn-Black Library and two-phases of renovations now completed in the Cannon Student Center. Work in the library included environmental abatement, installation of new stud walls, sheetrock and high density shelving. The yearlong library renovation culminated with an open house at the facility Jan. 17. Renovation work in the Cannon Student Center revamped the wing of the Center which houses the Student Affairs offices, enclosed and updated a small, private meeting space called Adams Loft, expanded and gave a new cosmetic finish to the College bookstore, and refurbished Leonard Lounge, a large common space, and McCorkles, a fast-food dining area.

Ramsey, Burgin and Smith Architects, Inc. of Salisbury, oversaw the library renovations, while the College has worked on the Student Center renovation and addition with the Winston-Salem architect Larry Robb and project manager, Knoxville, Tennessee-based Lawler Woods.

The Cannon Student Center addition, off the back west wing of the facility, is now underway, with footings poured the week of Jan. 14. This addition will house the post office (now temporarily relocated in a mobile unit), the Lerner Wellness Center with a new aerobics space, the Hurley Room, an executive dining area, and a small kitchenette.

In tandem with the addition, the dining hall on the lower level of the Student Center will be reconfigured to create more intimate, less institutional, dining space.

Also Happening on Campus
Several smaller facility projects are also underway at Catawba. These include the creation of the Dr. William F. Palmer Archives in a small building located off the back corner of the library, modest refurbishment of a leased building located at the corner of 129 Corriher Avenue at Brenner Avenue to create a Music Annex where community music lessons will be offered, and renovation of the restrooms located in the lobby area of Keppel Auditorium and Crystal Lounge in the Robertson College-Community Center.
