    Five Panelists to Speak September 4th at "BookRevue"

    Five panelists will provide insights and perspectives on Catawba College's 2007 common reading selection, "Mountains Beyond Mountains," when they participate the annual BookRevue on campus Tuesday, September 4th.

    McDuffies' Scholarship to Help Students from Rowan, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg Counties

    James Doyle McDuffie '50 of Charlotte and wife Darlene Sears McDuffie have established a scholarship at Catawba College which bears their names. Preference for the scholarship will be given to students from Rowan, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties.

    Catawba Community Music Offerings for 2007-2008

    The Catawba College Community Music Program is now enrolling students for 2007-2008 classes, ensembles and lessons. Providing quality music education and opportunities for students of all ages and levels of ability since 1984, Community Music is located in the Williams Music Building on the campus of Catawba College.     Lilly Center Freshman Retreat Sets Tone for New Students

    Around 80 members of Catawba College's Class of 2011 were formally welcomed to the college community at a commissioning service held Friday, August 17 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. However, this group's indoctrination into Catawba College life began several days before, when these same students participated in a freshman retreat at Johns River Camp near Collettsville, N.C.

    Committee Formed to Guide Catawba's Work in Climate Commitment

    Faculty and staff members at Catawba College have been tapped to serve on a committee that will guide the institution's work in support of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Committee members begin their work two months after Catawba joined close to 300 other colleges and universities nationwide in supporting the ACUPCC.

    Catawba Ranked #4 in Nation for Best College Theatre

    Catawba College's Theatre Arts Department continues to be nationally ranked. It is rated fourth in the nation for best college theatre this year, according to the 2008 edition of The Princeton Review's "Best 366 Colleges" guide which hit bookstands Tuesday, August 21. The 2007 edition of the publication ranked Catawba's Theatre Arts Department seventh in the country for best college theatre.

    Catawba College Ranked 16th among Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the South

    Catawba College is one of the nation's 320 best baccalaureate colleges according to the 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges," published by U.S.News & World Report. These baccalaureate colleges are ranked according to geographic region (North, South, East, West) with Catawba ranked 16th in the South.

    Catawba College First-Year Students Move In

    Move-in day came early for some Catawba College first-year students. Eighty of the institution's first-year students arrived on campus Wednesday morning to move their belongings into their residence halls before departing to participate in a first-year retreat at Johns River Camp in Collettsville, N.C.

    Catawba College President Dr. Robert Knott Announces His Retirement

    Dr. Robert Knott, Catawba College's 20th President, publicly announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year during an annual gathering of faculty and staff August 14th. Knott, who is entering his sixth year of service at the institution, said his planned retirement "was in the best interest of the College" and would allow new leadership "to build on what we've done and move into a new and exciting future."

    Catawba's New Choral Director Plans to Stoke Students' Love of Music

    Paul E. Oakley's rather unconventional childhood fueled his own passion for music. He is hoping to stoke that same passion in Catawba students, whether they seek to major in sacred music, his area of expertise, or simply to maintain their music as a hobby or pastime.

    Catawba College Professor and Two Students Participate in Muzak's Summer Noise! Camp in Los Angeles

    Dr. David Lee Fish, an associate professor of music at Catawba College, and two Catawba music business majors participated in Muzak's Summer Noise! Camp in Los Angeles in July. Noise! is sponsored by the Muzak's Heart & Soul Foundation and brings teens from across the country together for two weeks each summer for an up-close view of the music industry.

    Catawba Professor Presents Paper at International Conference

    Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, Dean of General Education and Associate Professor of English at Catawba College, recently presented a paper at a two day international conference on 'The Idea of the City: Early Modern, Modern, and Post Modern Locations and Communities" at the University of Northampton, England.

    Catawba College Prepares to Crank Up New Academic Year

    Faculty, staff, administrators and coaches at Catawba College are preparing to crank up a new academic year and some students have already moved into their residence halls on campus. The earliest arrivals on campus are trainers and athletes, including football, volleyball and men's and women's soccer team members.

    Timeline for Campus Construction & Renovation

    With Abernethy Village and its five new residence halls completed as of August 1st and students housed there, the Knoxville, Tennessee-based higher education consulting firm of Lawler-Wood, working with the College on campus construction and renovation, has issued a timeline for remaining campus construction and renovation projects.

    Teachers in Flight Reunite for Launch

Two decades after the space shuttle Challenger explosion, teachers selected across the country for the space program will reunite and watch a fellow educator embark on a space mission. Christa McAuliffe was selected over 114 other finalists in 1985 to be the first teacher in space. But the Challenger was never able to complete its mission. Now, another teacher will make the journey.

    Catawba College Professor Promoted to Dean of General Education

    Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English who has served at Catawba College as director of the First-Year Experience and assistant dean, has been promoted to Dean of General Education. In his new role, Acree Cavalier will oversee a task force on general education assessment and review with a goal to strengthen the institution's general education program.     Catawba Graduate Named Principal at Southeast Middle School

    School officials named new principals for Knollwood Elementary and Southeast Middle Schools Tuesday, filling the last two principal vacancies in the system. Louis Edward "Skip" Kraft will move up to take Jamie Durant's place at Southeast Middle. He earned his bachelor's degree in special education and adaptive physical education in 1983. Kraft also finished his master's degree in school administration in 2006 at UNC-Charlotte.
