    Salisbury Couple Hooked on Catawba College Athletics Establish Scholarship to Assist Student-Athletes

    Roy and Norma Campbell of Salisbury first fell in love with Catawba College athletics through their membership in the athletics booster organization, the Chiefs Club. Then they started thinking of other ways they might better support the student-athletes.

    2007 Cheerleading Reunion Set for November 9th and 10th

    A reunion for all former Catawba College Cheerleaders is planned for Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th, 2007. Friday evening will feature a reception followed by a dinner and activities on Saturday will center around the 1:30 pm clash with the long time arch-rival Lenoir-Rhyne Bears.     Two Catawba College Trustees Honored with Prestigious Adrian Shuford Award

    Two Catawba College Trustees were honored Wednesday, May 16 at Catawba College as the recipients of the prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service. Presentations to Claude B. Hampton, Jr. of Salisbury and James L. Williamson of Charlotte were made during the College's annual President's Circle Dinner, held to recognize the institution's major donors, in the Cannon Student Center.

    Robert Casmus, Head Athletic Trainer at Catawba College, Receives National Honor

    Robert Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, has received a national honor. The College/University Athletic Trainers' Committee of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) has chosen Casmus as the Division II Head Athletic Trainer of the Year. He will be formally recognized at the NATA annual meeting in late June in Anaheim, Calf.

    Catawba College to Offer Forensic Course for Local High School Students

    Catawba College's Chemistry Department is set to share some of its resources and expertise with Rowan-Salisbury High Schools this fall by offering a Forensic Laboratory Analysis course for high school students. The course will be taught by Dr. Mark Sabo, an associate professor of chemistry who worked at the Counterterrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., last summer.

    Catawba Announces Recipients of Prestigious First Family Scholarships

    Fourteen incoming freshmen for Catawba College's fall 2007 semester have competed successfully and been awarded the college's prestigious First Family Scholarships. These students were among more than 74 who vied for the awards at a First Family Scholarship Weekends held in November and February on campus.

    Catawba College Awards 279 Degrees at 2007 Commencement Exercises

    Catawba College awarded 181 degrees during the 2007 10 a.m. commencement exercise: 89 Bachelor of Arts degrees; 12 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees; and 80 Bachelor of Science degrees. Also awarded were two honorary degrees, the annual O. B. Michael Award, and the two Whitener Award recipients.

    Three Catawba College Graduates Recognized with Awards

    Three Catawba College graduates were recognized during Commencement Exercises on campus for academic excellence. Two were honored as the Whitener Award recipients during the 10 a.m. ceremony, while one student was honored as the Barbara Andrews Award recipient during the 2 p.m.

    Two Honorary Degrees Awarded During Commencement

    Two Salisbury residents were awarded honorary degrees during Catawba College's 10 a.m. Commencement Exercise on Saturday, May 12. Wilson L. Smith and William C. Stanback received honorary doctor of humanitarian service degrees in recognition of their many contributions to the Rowan-Salisbury community and Catawba College.

    Former Chancellor of UNC-Pembroke Receives O.B. Michael Award during Catawba College Commencement

    Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine of Pinehurst, a 1952 Catawba College alumnus and the former chancellor of the UNC-Pembroke, received the institution's O.B. Michael Award during Catawba's 10 a.m. commencement exercise Saturday, May 12.

    Retiring Professor of English Recognized at Catawba College Commencement

    Adams joined the Catawba College community in 1991 as division secretary for humanities. She became a Catawba employee a scant four years after she, at age 39, and her daughter Cari entered the College as freshmen students together in 1987.

    Catawba College Student Derek Daisey Places Second in National BMI Foundation's John Lennon Songwriting Contest

    For the second year in a row, a Catawba College student has been named a top finisher in the BMI Foundation's Tenth Annual John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Derek Daisey, a 20-year-old resident of Lewes, Delaware, and a music business major, tied for second place in the 2007 competition and will receive a $5,000 scholarship for his song "Where to Begin."

    Catawba College to Host Graduation Exercises May 12

    Catawba College will host two graduation exercises on Saturday, May 12 in Keppel Auditorium of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. Those planning to attend, however, will need a ticket. Catawba College Alumnus Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine '52 of Pinehurst will be presented the annual O.B. Michael Distinguished Alumnus Award.

    Edward M. (Miles) Gurley '01 Joins Argus Insurance

    Argus Insurance, a wholly owned subsidiary of High Point Bank and Trust Company, has hired Miles Gurley as a Commercial Insurance Producer in the High Point office. High Point Bank acquired Argus Insurance in December 2006.

    Many Catawba Sports Hall of Fame Members Return for the 2007 Induction

    36 members of the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame members were on campus April 27th and 28th for the 30th annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The weekend began with beautiful weather for the annual Captain's Choice Golf Tournament followed by a cookout enjoyed by all.

    1970 Alumnus Establishes New Scholarship at Catawba College

    Catawba College Alumnus Mike Hutchens '70 says that he established the new scholarship at his alma mater because he "wanted to leave something with my name on it that would make a difference in the life of a student with financial need." As a student, Hutchens took out loans to help pay his way through Catawba and a scholarship such as the one he has established "would have certainly helped."
