    New Scholarship at Catawba College Honors Longtime Employee and Alumna

    Members of the Catawba College Class of 1961 wanted a special and enduring way to honor longtime College employee and 1944 alumna Nina Louise Tucker of Salisbury. They pooled their resources and established the Louise Tucker Endowed Scholarship at the institution in honor of their beloved "L.T."

    Catawba College Sociology Professor to Make March Appearance on "Jeopardy"

    Since 1984, Dr. Carla Eastis has had one big goal: to be a contestant on "Jeopardy." Next month, March 8th to be exact, she'll fulfill that goal. But, the journey she made to reach her goal began last spring when she took an online "Jeopardy" test. Her responses on that 50-question test got her an invitation to Atlanta, Ga., in October for a videotaped "Jeopardy" audition.

    Tickets on Sale Now for 21st Annual Brady Author's Symposium at Catawba College

    Catawba College marks the 21st year of its annual Brady Author's Symposium March 29 with author Gish Jen. Tickets are on sale now for symposium events (scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) which include a lecture, luncheon, book signing, and an exclusive writing question and answer session.

    Catawba College Professor Speaks at Conference

    Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor of political science at Catawba College, was a lecturer at the 2007 Florida Chautauqua Assembly held February 7-9 at the Chautauqua Center in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Silverburg's lecture was entitled"Migration, Immigration, and Globalization."

    Catawba College Professor to Participate in Law School Program

    Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor of political science at Catawba College, will participate this summer in the Vermont Law School's 2007 Environmental Law and Policy Scholarship Program. He applied for and received a full-tuition scholarship to take part in the two-week program at the campus in South Royalton, Vermont.

    Catawba College Students and Faculty to Attend Psychological Association Meeting

    Students and faculty of the psychology department will attend the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in New Orleans, La., February 21-24. Dr. Karen Horner, Dr. Lyn Boulter, and Dr. Sheila Brownlow will attend, along with students Lindsay Mellon, a senior from Berlin, Conn.; Katherine Fair, a senior from Fairbanks, Alaska; and Kathleen Blake, a junior from Greensboro.

    Over 70 Return for Men's Basketball Reunion at Catawba College

    Seventy-one former Catawba College basketball players returned to campus February 9 and 10, 2007 for a reunion. The weekend began with a Friday evening reception in the Meyer Auxiliary Gymnasium that gave all a chance to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Saturday featured lunch and several former players speaking to the group; their remarks evoked both laughter along with some tears as the gathering proved an emotional time for those attending.

    Catawba College Hosts Young Guns Battle of the Bands

    Catawba College is now accepting entries for its first annual Carolina Young Guns Battle of the Bands for high-school musicians. Finalists will be invited to Catawba's Salisbury, N.C., campus for a Final Showdown on Saturday April 28, 2007.

    Catawba Graduate to Be the New Voice of Fort Myers Miracle

    FORT MYERS, FL - The process of becoming a Saint usually takes decades or even centuries and involves having a life of almost perfect virtue during that time. For the voice of the Fort Myers Miracle, Sean Aronson, it took just a few years to reach the status of becoming a Saint, a Saint Paul Saint, that is. Aronson is leaving the Miracle to become the new radio voice of the St. Paul Saints.

    Catawba College Presents "The Pillowman," a Black Comedy

    For its seventh show of the 2006-2007 season, the Catawba College Theatre Arts Department presents "The Pillowman," a black comedy by playwright Martin McDonaugh. The show runs at 7:30 p.m. February 21-24 in Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus.

    Catawba College Students' Band Releases New Album Feb. 24

    The Fisher Street Band, which consists of four Catawba College students and one Salisbury musician, will release its debut CD, "In the Background of the World, Saturday, Feb. 24. To celebrate the release, the band will offer a free performance at Las Palmas on Fisher Street in downtown Salisbury beginning at 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 24. At that event, copies of the Band's CD will be available for only $5 each and the first 20 people who purchase a CD will receive a free t-shirt or other band merchandis

    Catawba College's Business Advisory Board to Hold Second Meeting

    A new Catawba College Business Advisory Board has recently been formed which will offer assistance to the Ketner School of Business. The 31-member Board, which has held its initial meeting and plans to reconvene March 16, consists of local and regional business professionals.

    Catawba College Offering Some of the Largest Teaching Scholarships in N.C.

    Catawba College is offering high school seniors interested in teaching an opportunity to apply for some of the largest teaching scholarships currently being offered by a N.C. college or university. Ten of the $13,000 scholarships, which include an additional $2,000 for eligible N.C. residents, are being offered for the 2007-2008 academic year.

    Catawba College's Young Artist in Residence Is Finalist in International Songwriting Competition

    One of Catawba College's 2006 graduates, who was the first place winner of the BMI Foundation's 9th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards, is a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC).

    Catawba College's Dr. Michael Baranski Honored with Conservation Communicator Award

    Dr. Michael Baranski, a Catawba College professor of biology, was recently honored with the 2007 Conservation Communicator Award by North Carolina's Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS). The award was presented January 13 at the society's annual awards banquet held in Raleigh.
