    Local Boys among Tarheel Boys' State Participants

    "They came from all corners of North Carolina. Two hundred fifty-three boys poured onto Catawba College's campus June 16 for the annual American Legion Tarheel Boys' State program, but some didn't have to travel very far. Chris Johnston, John Misenheimer, Dustin Ritch, Michael Rothwell, and Matt Stevenson were among 14 local boys participating in the weeklong program. Misenheimer, Ritch, and Stevenson are rising seniors at South Rowan High School, Johnston is a rising senior at North Rowan, and

    67th Governor of the American Legion's Tar Heel Boys' State Elected

    Garrett Haywood of High Point was elected as Governor of the American Legion Tar Heel Boys' State Wednesday, June 21 during the week-long event held at Catawba College. Garrett is a rising senior at Southwest Guilford High School in High Point, N.C. He is the son of Gary and Kathy Haywood of High Point, N.C.

    Catawba College Professor Serves as Editor for Publication

    Dr. Michael Baranski, a Catawba College biology professor, served as editor for "The Proceedings of the Andre Michaux International Symposium," which was published and distributed in late May. The 237-page "Proceedings" appear in "Occasional Papers in Eastern Botany," a supplement to "CASTANEA, The Journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society."

    College Receives $1 Million Grant from Local Foundation

    Thanks to the Blanche & Julian Robertson Family Foundation, Inc. of Salisbury, Catawba College will receive a $1 million grant, payable over five years, for use in the College's capital improvement program. Catawba's grant headed the list of 63 others with a value of $1,271,663 approved during the Foundation's spring 2006 grant cycle.

    Officials Announce New Program Name and a New Major and Degree

    On June 1, Catawba College's Lifelong Learning Program became the School of Evening and Graduate Studies and Dr. Edith Bolick '70 became its Dean. Along with its new title, the School has a new degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Education (B.A.E.) degree with a major in Birth-Kindergarten (B-K) Education.

    Tar Heel Boys' State at Catawba College June 18-24

    Catawba College will host the 67th annual session of Tar Heel Boys' State June 18-24. This is the fourth consecutive year that the weeklong event has been held on campus and approximately 250 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are expected.

    Alumna Establishes Scholarship in Memory of Her Parents

    Jo Patterson Coble '52 of Concord and her children, Carolyn Coble Cline '75, Ann Coble Shaughnessy '78, and John "Wally" Coble, have established a scholarship at Catawba College to pay tribute to the memory of Coble's parents. The J. Lewis and Blanche B. Patterson Endowed Scholarship will be given to students with financial need who are residents of Cabarrus County.

    Four Individuals Recognized at College Trustees Retreat

    Four members of the Catawba College Board of Trustees were recognized by their peers during the annual Trustees Retreat May 19 in Blowing Rock. Three of these individuals have stepped down from active service on that Board were recognized by a unanimous vote of the Board as trustees emeriti, while a fourth who resigned his membership on the Board and was presented a resolution of appreciation.

    Catawba College to Host the 67th Consecutive Session of Tar Heel Girls State

    For the fifth consecutive year, Catawba College will host Tar Heel Girls State June 11-17. Two hundred and eighty girls from across North Carolina, all high school juniors who are academically in the top third of their class, will attend the 67th annual, weeklong session, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina.

    Catawba College Receives Renewal Grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc.

    Catawba College has received a $500,000 renewal grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. under its "Sustaining the Theological Exploration of Vocation"program. This sustainability grant will augment a five-year, $1,999,503 grant that Catawba received in 2003 from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. for implementation of its on-campus program, You Can Make a Difference! A Lilly Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation. The new grant will allow Catawba, along with 30 other institutions receiving simi

    Speaker for 2007 Lilly Center Colloquium Announced

    Dr. Martin Marty, possibly the preeminent American church historian, will be the speaker for the 2007 Lilly Center Colloquium. The date for the Colloquium will be February 27, 2007 with Dr. Marty making presentations at 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. (Community Forum).

    Catawba Chiefs Begin 2006-07 Membership Drive

    The Catawba College Chiefs Club began its 2006-2007 membership drive June1. Its goal for this coming year is 460 members, according to Gordon Kirkland, Chiefs Club Coordinator. "Our members support the competition of Catawba's 18 sports teams," Kirkland stated. "Without the Chiefs Club, our teams would not be in a position to compete at the current high level. Our membership totaled 449 in 2005-06 and we hope to increase that number this year."
