NCAA Makes Decision on "Catawba Indians"
On Tuesday morning, May 30, Catawba College received official notification that the NCAA "Staff Review Committee" has approved the use of the name "Catawba Indians" by Catawba College for its athletic teams. This notification will remove the College from the list of institutions previously sanctioned for the use of a Native American nickname and related symbolism. Catawba College intends to abide fully by the NCAA directives in this matter.
Mona and Lee Wallace Become Benefactors at Catawba College
Catawba College Trustee Mona Lisa Wallace and husband Lee Wallace have made a substantial gift to the institution which moves them to the benefactor level (lifetime giving of more than $1 million). The couple says their gift reflects the importance of education in their lives and the importance of Catawba College to the Salisbury-Rowan community.
Two Catawba College Trustees Honored with Prestigious Adrian Shuford Award
Two Catawba College Trustees were honored Wednesday, May 17 at Catawba College as the recipients of the prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service. Presentations to Newton O. Fowler of Concord and C.A. "Junie" Michael, III '70 of Mooresville were made during the College's annual President's Circle Dinner, held to recognize the institution's major donors, in the Cannon Student Center.
Catawba Graduate Wins Top John Lennon Scholarship Award
One of Catawba College's 2006 graduates, Dennis Reed of Charlotte, is the first place winner of the BMI Foundation's 9th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards. The 21-year-old music business major shared the stage with Lil Jon, Maroon 5, and others in a May 16th ceremony in Los Angeles.
Catawba College Presidential Honor Roll Announced
A total of 92 students have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2005-2006 academic year at Catawba College, according to Dr. Barbara Hetrick, vice president and dean of the college. Students named to the Presidential Honor Roll List have achieved a 3.7 grade point average in 30 or more semester hours.

A total of 183 students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Catawba College, according to Dr. Barbara Hetrick, vice president and dean of the college. Students named to the Dean's List have achieved a 3.5 grade point average in 15 or more semester hours.
Young Man from Kannapolis Wants to Help His Hometown Prosper
At a young age, Ryan Dayvault of Kannapolis came to believe that "there's no place like home." That mantra has helped the 20-year-old chart a course for his future that he hopes will take him into public administration and eventually bring him to figure prominently in leading his hometown to better economic times.
Catawba College Graduates 273 in Two Separate Ceremonies
Saturday, May 13th was a really big deal for Gwen Alexander Stidham of China Grove. She walked across the same stage in Keppel Auditorium and for the same reason that her eldest daughter, Renee, had walked across it 15 years prior.
Catawba College Class of 2006 Graduates
On May 13, 2006, 273 members of Catawba's Class of 2006 crossed the stage and received their diplomas. The college awarded master's degrees in education, bachelor of arts degrees, bachelor of business administration degrees, bachelor of fine arts degrees and bachelor of science degrees in two separate ceremonies in Keppel Auditorium.
New Scholarship at Catawba College Targets Rising Seniors Majoring in Business
Rising seniors majoring in business administration at Catawba College will be eligible for a new scholarship established by William E. '53 and Virginia Samuels of West End, N.C. The William E. and Virginia Samuels Endowed Scholarship will both recognize and provide financial assistance for a rising senior business major who both demonstrates leadership ability and was on Catawba’s Dean’s List during his or her junior year.
Catawba College Students Inducted into Honor Society
Eighteen Catawba College students were inducted into Phi Epsilon, an honorary scholastic society, during a ceremony held Sunday, April 30 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The honor society seeks to stimulate scholarship, develop character, encourage leadership, and create fellowship opportunities.
Catawba College Professor Publishes Part I of Four-Volume Book
A second volume of Catawba College Mathematics Professor Dr. Paul Baker's autobiographical fiction work, "A Shadowy Passage," is now available. Part I, "Vietnam: The Initiation," covers the first month or so Baker spent as an intelligence officer in Vietnam.
Six North Carolina Leaders, Including Catawba College's Phil Kirk, Receive 2006 Razor Walker Awards
Catawba College's new vice president for external affairs, Phillip J. Kirk '67, was among six North Carolina leaders who were the recipients of the 14th annual UNC Wilmington Watson School of Education's Razor Walker Awards.
Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Four New Members
Four graduates were inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on its 29th anniversary, Saturday, April 29th. The inductees were (with graduation year): Earl B. Lentz (1956) of Kannapolis; Amy Price-Peters (1994) of Canton, Ga.; Robert C. Rathbun (1976) of Dunwoody, Ga.; and Clyde L. Walker (1951), deceased, formerly of Charlotte.
