Catawba College Writer-In-Residence Has Poems Accepted for Publication
Catawba College Writer-In-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller has had several of her poems accepted for inclusion in different publications. Fuller's "Pond Pantoum" will be published in the Comstock Review, while "Zinnia. Versimilitude. Yes." will be included in Kakalak 2006, a new anthology featuring poetry by North and South Carolina writers.
Catawba College Sociology Professor Presents at Conference
Catawba College Assistant Professor of Sociology Dr. Carla Eastis recently made a presentation at the Southern Sociological Society Conference held in New Orleans March 22-25. Eastis was a member of a panel entitled "Bringing Sociology into the First Year Experience."
Phil Kirk Accepts Appointment at Catawba College
Catawba College Alumnus and Trustee Phil Kirk has accepted a position at his alma mater as Vice President of External Relations. According to College President Dr. Robert Knott, Kirk's appointment becomes effective July 1.
Students Volunteer during Weeklong Catawba Cares
Catawba College students, faculty and staff donated 188 hours of their time last week during Catawba Cares Week of Service. Students entertained residents at Trinity Oaks with songs, helped out at Rowan Helping Ministries Overnight Shelter, and even cleaned stalls at the Horse Protection Society.

Professor of English Dr. Laurel Eason spent part of her Spring Break sunbathing in the courtyard of the Museum for the German People in Berlin.
A Report of the Status of our Appeal to the NCAA
In October 2005, the Catawba College Board of Trustees authorized an official appeal to the NCAA with regard to the limitations they had placed on our continued use of the Catawba Indians as the nickname for our athletic programs. In follow-up to our appeal, we have had two conversations with Dr. Bernard Franklin who chairs the NCAA committee responsible for reviewing appeals. We also arranged for Chief Gilbert Blue of the Catawba Indian Nation to speak directly with Dr. Franklin.

"THE MOZART CONNECTION", a concert of music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and two of his contemporaries, Josef Haydn and Ludwig von Beethoven, will be presented by the Catawba College Choral Department at the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 9.

Catawba College celebrates the 20th year of its annual Brady Author's Symposium April 13 with author Jodi Picoult. Tickets are on sale now for symposium events (scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.), which include a lecture, luncheon, book signing, and an exclusive writing question and answer session.
Catawba Music Department Presents "Seasons of Love," A Concert of Popular and Jazz Favorites by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals
The Catawba College Music Department will present the 12th annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2006, in the Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. Seasons of Love is a concert of popular, jazz, and swing selections by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals, directed by Rosemary C. Kinard, assistant professor of music at Catawba.

Catawba College Invited to Participate in New Council of Independent Colleges Initiative
Catawba faculty members participating in the initiative include team leader, Dr. Cynthia Osterhus, assistant professor of teacher education; Dr. James Stringfield, chair and professor of teacher education; Dr. John Zerger, chair and professor of mathematics; and Dr. Paul Baker, professor of mathematics.
State Math Contest Scheduled at Catawba College
Catawba College will be a site for the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contests. The Catawba College Mathematics Department will be administering the Algebra I and Geometry tests on Thursday, April 6, 2006. Any student currently enrolled in Algebra I or Geometry may participate.
Catawba College Faculty and Students Attend Association Meeting
Several Catawba College psychology faculty and their students attended the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Atlanta, Ga., this month. Dr. Lyn Boulter, professor of psychology, chaired the Association’s Committee for Professional Opportunity (CEPO) undergraduate research poster session and sat on a Psi Chi panel with faculty from other schools discussing "Preparing for Graduate School: Preparation Strategies."
Catawba Mathematics Students Celebrate National Pi Day at North Rowan Elementary
Dr. Sharon Sullivan, assistant professor of mathematics, and a group of Catawba College math majors visited North Rowan Elementary School on March 14 to celebrate National Pi Day. Their goal was to get younger students interested in math by introducing them to the number pi and its everyday applications.
Catawba College Faculty Have Paper Accepted for 2006 Academy of Management Conference
Dr. J. Andrew Morris, Dr. James W. Slate, Dr. Jason Hunt, and Dr. John Zerger had a paper entitled "Overcoming Bad Management Theory: Rediscovering Moral Sentiments" accepted for presentation at the 2006 Academy of Management (AOM)Annual Conference The AOM is the premier outlet for management research.
Finding Meaning in Life When Nothing Makes Sense
The March 21st Catawba College Community Forum will feature producer, director, writer and award-winning independent documentary film maker Macky Alston. The 7:30 p.m. event will take place in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ralph W. Ketner Hall on the campus and is free and open to the public.

A total of 216 students have been named to the Dean's List for the fall semester at Catawba College, according to Dr. Barbara Hetrick, vice president and dean of the college.

Catawba College Plans New and Improved Residence Halls and Academic Center
New and improved residence halls, a refurbished academic center, and a renovated student center are in Catawba College's immediate future. At their annual meeting February 21, college trustees authorized administrators to proceed with an ambitious plan for making capital improvements on campus.
