"Teddy Roosevelt Rides Again" at Catawba College
Teddy Roosevelt rides again during a course being offered this spring through Catawba College's Lifelong Learning Program. Dr. Al Riggs, former professor of history at McGill University in Canada from 1988-2002, has retired to Salisbury and will be sharing his expertise on the Presidents Roosevelt (Theodore and Franklin) in this course.
Victory Junction: A Summer Internship
While most college students took a breather from schoolwork this past summer, three Catawba students, junior Hilah Teague of Southern Pines, senior Willie Olds of Kinston and junior Sherri Hill of Salisbury, unselfishly chose to spend their break tucked away in the tiny little town of Randleman, N.C. working with kids diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening illnesses at Victory Junction Gang Camp.
Salisbury Couple Participates in Ride for the Roses
"HE DOES EXIST!!!" yelped Catawba College Associate Director of Lifelong Learning Ann Dunn of Salisbury to her husband, Alex, as they excitedly watched Lance Armstrong approach the podium to welcome 6,500 cyclists who were eagerly anticipating the start of the ninth annual Lance Armstrong Foundation's Ride for the Roses held in Austin, Texas on October 23.
John and Nell Isenhour Establish First Family Scholarship at Catawba College
John Isenhour Sr. of Salisbury has likely forgotten more about making bricks than most people know, but he remembers vividly the value of his own college education. Now, Isenhour and his wife Nell have established a scholarship at Catawba College through a charitable remainder trust which they hope will provide future generations of students with that same valuable college education.
Notes From Kiev – Part II
Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English and assistant dean of Catawba College, along with wife Carol and their three sons, are living in Kiev between September 2005 and June 2006. Acree Cavalier is completing a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature there during the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholars Program.

Catawba College Professor's Memories and Letters Evolve into Book
For almost 20 years, Catawba College Mathematics Professor Dr. Paul Baker repressed memories of the year he spent as an intelligence officer in Vietnam. But while he was recovering from a back operation in 1988, he discovered he "could think about that time" again, And, he realized he had a primary source of information about that time in his life – his daily letters to his wife.

Speaking on the stereotypes of Appalachian people in modern film, Chandra Lowe will be a presenter at the PCA/ACA National Conference 2006 in April. When Catawba College senior Chandra Lowe of Budd Lake, N.J. wrote her term paper for last fall's Appalachian Culture & Society Honors course, she thought that was all she was doing.
Catawba College Professor Serves on Task Forces and Conducts Seminars
Catawba College Professor Business Dr. Stephen Hiatt has been involved in a variety of activities outside the classroom. Hiatt has served and will serve on the Salisbury Convention Center Task Force. He recently completed serving on the Business Incubator Task Force for the City of Salisbury.
Catawba College Professor Participates in N.C. Teacher of the Year Reunion
Dr. Cyndi Osterhus, an assistant professor of teacher education at Catawba College, recently attended the N.C. Teacher of the Year Reunion, sponsored by the N.C. Association of Educators. She was one of 35 N.C. teachers to have been selected to receive the honor since its establishment in 1970. Osterhus was the 1987 N.C. Teacher of the Year.
Catawba College Professor Publishes Article for Online Journal
Dr. Bethany Sinnott, professor and chair of English at Catawba College, recently published an article " 'N.C. Shakes': The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival" in a new peer-reviewed online Shakespeare journal at the University of Georgia named Borrowers and Lenders.
