"Simple Living" to feature Catawba College Center for Environment
The Catawba College Environmental Program and Center for the Environment will appear this fall on the fifth program of "Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska." The show is broadcast on PBS stations throughout the United States. In North Carolina, it will be on WTVI-TV at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 5. You may contact your local PBS station to learn the date and time “Simple Living” Program No. 205 will appear in your area.
Space Still Available on Buses to UNC/Catawba Game
Seats are still available on the buses heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. on November 12 for the men’s basketball game between Catawba and UNC. Tip-off time will be announced approximately 7 days prior to game day and bus departure will be 3.5 hours before game time. The trip will drop you off in front of the Dean Smith Center and return you to Catawba College immediately following the game. Light refreshments will be served during the ride as well.
Catawba College Community Members Provide Hurricane Relief During Fall Break
In reaction to the horrific disaster of Hurricane Katrina, a group of 22 students and five staff members from Catawba College ventured to the Gulf Coast over fall break (Oct. 21-25). The students ranged from freshmen to seniors, chemistry and athletic majors to business and religion majors, and were teamed with staff members from various departments on campus to make a very diverse group of volunteers.
Catawba’s Baseball and Softball Teams Sponsor Rodeo
Catawba College’s Baseball and Softball Teams are sponsoring the First Annual Catawba Grand Slam Professional Rodeo at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12. The events will be held at the Cabarrus Arena and Event Center on Highway 49 North in Concord.
Catawba College Hosts Service of Appreciation to Mark Campus Ministry Endowment
Catawba College Trustees in town for their semi-annual meeting, along with donors, friends, students, faculty and staff members gathered in the Omwake Dearborn Chapel Monday, October 17 to mark the establishment of the Porter and Maria Seiwell Endowment for Campus Ministry. The establishment of the $1 million endowment fund was a very significant way for two couples long associated with the College to both honor and remember their roots.
Catawba College Trustees Direct Administrators to Refine Targeted Master Plan and to Appeal NCAA Ruling Concerning Catawba's Indians
The Catawba College Board of Trustees authorized college administrators to refine a targeted master plan for the campus and to appeal a recent NCAA ruling against the use of the term “Catawba Indians” by the institution's athletic teams. These actions were based on unanimous votes by the trustees at their semi-annual meeting held October 18 on campus.
Catawba College Students Will Spend Fall Break in Pascagoula, Mississippi On Hurricane Relief Efforts
Twenty-two Catawba College students, along with several staff and faculty members, will spend their fall break providing hurricane relief efforts to residents in the Pascagoula, Mississippi area. Pascagoula is a city in the Gulf Coast region which has been adopted by the City of Salisbury.
Catawba Sells Out of Reserved Tickets to Catawba/UNC in Hours
Catawba College reports that all 450 reserved tickets for the basketball game versus UNC on November 12 have been sold. It took merely hours for phone calls to flood into the College Athletic Department and have each seat allocated.

Catawba College has 450 reserved tickets available to the public to purchase for the Catawba/UNC basketball game on Saturday, November 12 at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Catawba College to Host Association Meeting
Catawba College will host a meeting of the Council for College Health Professionals on campus Friday, October 21. Kathryn Welborn, R.N., director of Catawba’s Proctor Foundation Health Services Center, is this year’s president of that organization.
Two Catawba College Professors Make Presentations at Conference
Dr. Cynthia Osterhus, an assistant professor of teacher education at Catawba College, recently made a presentation to the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Conference in Greensboro. Her presentation was entitled, “Integrating Technology into Mathematics Methods Courses.”
Four Catawba College Alumni Recognized During Homecoming Weekend
Four graduates of Catawba College were recognized as Distinguished Alumni Saturday, Oct. 15 during the College’s Homecoming Weekend activities. Their award presentations were made during a noon barbecue luncheon for alumni held in the Goodman Gymnasium prior to the College’s football game against Newberry College.
First Installment of Dr. Phil Cavalier’s "Notes from Kyiv”
Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English and assistant dean of Catawba College, along with wife Carol and their three sons, are living in Kiev between September 2005 and June 2006. Acree Cavalier is completing a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature there during the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholars Program.
Catawba College Alumnus and Spouse Establish New Scholarship at College
Dick Smith ’56 of Salisbury still remembers the football scholarship he received in 1952 that enabled him to attend Catawba College. That scholarship, and the education it allowed him to obtain, helped shape his life, he says.
Theatre Arts Department Presents “Bastards and Fools”
The Catawba College Theatre Arts Department’s production of “Bastards and Fools,” written by former Catawba College student Liam Macik, will run October 25-29 at 7:30 p.m. in Hedrick Theatre on campus.
Teacher Education Students Participate in Pinning Ceremony
Twenty-five Catawba College students were honored in a pinning ceremony to mark their admission to the Teacher Education Program held Tuesday, October 11 in Tom Smith Auditorium. The ceremony was sponsored by the Student North Carolina Association of Educators (SNCAE) and the Rowan-Salisbury Teacher of the Year for 2005-06, Mr. Terry Sippel, was the guest speaker.

Dr. Bethany Sinnott, professor and chair of English at Catawba College, recently participated in several events associated with the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival in High Point.
Catawba College Professor Travels and Lectures in Ukraine on Fulbright Lectureship
Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, Catawba College’s assistant dean and associate professor of English, is traveling and giving scholarly lectures in Ukraine while there on a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature. Acree Cavalier, wife Carol and their three sons, left for Kiev in early September and will return to Salisbury next June.
Catawba Coed from Connecticut Brings Her Solace with Her to Salisbury
The parents of Catawba College first-year student Kathleen “Kat” Weigel of East Haven, Connecticut knew she’d be a long way from home when she started college this year and would probably experience some separation anxiety. They had heard that one way to ease that anxiety was to allow Kat to bring something familiar from home with her to college. And so, she did.
Catawba College Alumni’s Band to Perform in Salisbury October 14
Two Catawba College alumni from the class of 2005, Jennifer Reiff and Jason Rigney, will be performing with their band, Labeling Deloris, Saturday, October 14, at Salisbury’s new music venue, 315. Along with Reiff and Rigney, Jason’s brother, Brad, fills the bass spot and Andrew Boudouris, also a former Catawba student, handles percussion.
Catawba Lecture Features Social & Environmental Investing & Purchasing
Alisa Gravitz, executive director of Co-op America, will speak at Catawba College on Tuesday, Oct. 18, on “Social and Environmental Responsibility in Investing and Purchasing.” The presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Room 300 of the Center for the Environment building. A 7 o’clock reception will precede the talk.
Catawba College Students Gear Up for Study Abroad in England
Catawba College students will have an opportunity to spend a semester abroad studying in England beginning next fall thanks to a new partnership agreement with the University of Evansville. The agreement provides for Catawba faculty to participate in the operation of Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, and for Catawba students to study there, according to Dr. Kurt Corriher, director of Catawba’s Center for International Studies.
