Catawba College Tuesday Music 515 presents “Celtic Celli” October 11
The public is invited to attend the second in Catawba College’s Tuesday Music 515 performances for this fall, at 5:15 p.m. October 11, 2005, in the Omwake Dearborn Chapel on campus. An unusual program, which could also be called “Lord of the Dance on Cellos and Guitar,” will be featured.
Catawba Bookstore to Make Donation to Hurricane Relief Efforts
This Saturday, before and during the football game between Catawba and Mars Hill, the Catawba College Bookstore will donate 20 percent of all the proceeds from its sales to hurricane relief efforts. Seventy-seven Catawba College students who are recipients of Ralph W. Ketner Scholarships were recognized September 22 during a luncheon on campus. The majority of these students hail from the Rowan County area.

Catawba College Professor to Speak at Conference
Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor and chair of the political science department at Catawba College, will lecture Monday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 11 at the Andrews Valley Experience (ave!) in Andrews, N.C.
Silverburg’s lecture at 7 p.m. on October 10 is entitled “Protection and Civil Liberties,” and his lecture at 2 p.m. on October 11 is “Culture Wars in America.”
Catawba College’s Teacher Education Program Fares Well on State Performance Report
Catawba College’s Teacher Education Program has received the highest possible rank on the 2004-2005 Institution of Higher Education Performance Report and is judged by the North Carolina State Board of Education as having “met expectations.” Additionally, Catawba’s first-year teachers (the 2003-2004 cohort of student teachers) had a 100 percent pass rate on the PRAXIS II, placing the program in the first quartile of teacher education programs in the state.
Catawba College Theatre Arts Students and Productions Nominated for 2004-2005 Metrolina Theatre Awards
Some Catawba College Theatre Arts students have been selected as winners of some key 2004-2005 Metrolina Theatre Awards. Catawba’s “The Marriage of Figaro” was nominated for Outstanding Production and although it was not a winner, several of its cast and crew members were among the award winners.
Composting Is Green Alternative to Burning Leaves
Before you pile up your leaves and burn them this fall or put them out at the curb for the city to pick up, you may want to consider an alternative that will make the air easier to breathe and also make your garden grow. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Catawba College Center for the Environment will offer a workshop on composting that will help you use your leaves and food scraps as a resource, not a waste product.
Catawba College Professor’s Poetry Book Receives Award
“Sex Education,” a poetry book by Catawba College Writer-in-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller, had been selected as runner-up for this year’s Oscar Arnold Young Award. That award is given annually by the Poetry Council of North Carolina to the outstanding book of poetry published during the year by a North Carolina poet.
Catawba’s Community Music Program Announces New Personnel
The Catawba Community Music Program, an outreach of the Catawba College Music Department, announces the addition of two new performing-artist teachers. Dr. Joan Metelli, who teaches voice, and Jesse Davis, who teaches piano, have joined that program.
Catawba College Alumna Is on the Circuit with Thomas the Tank Engine
Catawba College Alumna Eva Keen of Linwood was just a small town gal who had never traveled widely until she started catching flights to rendezvous with Thomas the Tank Engine at far-flung places around the United States. And, she’ll readily admit that she’d never heard of Sir Topham Hatt nor Percy until last year when she landed a week-end job working with an event at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer.

Catawba College Theatre Arts Department’s production of “The Marriage of Bette and Boo” will run Sept. 20-24. All shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus.
Join Catawba for South Africa Trip
Catawba College honors students enrolled in a class entitled “Origins: Humans, Races, and Racism,” will cap their classroom experiences with a trip to South Africa in late December. Members of the Salisbury-Rowan community, alumni and friends of the College are invited to join them as they visit that country to examine how biological and sociological forces contribute to notions of race and to the perpetuation of racism.
New Scholarship Program Information for 2006-2007
Catawba College’s scholarship program has been revamped with new criteria and deadlines now in place. Since scholarship dollars tend to go fast, students of strong academic ability are encouraged to apply for admission to the College early and to submit the supplementary materials required for scholarship consideration.
Catawba Offers Fall Enrollment Opportunities to Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
Catawba College offers evening program courses on a block schedule that may conveniently serve students displaced by Hurricane Katrina who have not yet enrolled at other institutions. Students may enroll in one course at a time for a four-week block. Blocks begin September 12, October 10, and November 10. This schedule would also allow students to seek full- or part-time employment while enrolled in courses in this program.
Catawba College Does Its Part for Hurricane Katrina Relief
In the days following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the Gulf Coast, members of the Catawba College community have come up with creative ways to help storm victims. These efforts have allowed faculty, staff and students to be a small part of a larger national effort and to show solidarity with their adversely affected Southern neighbors.
Catawba College Professor Contracted by Oxford University Press to Write Article
Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor and chair of Political Science at Catawba College, is writing an article, “American Israel Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC),” for the Encyclopedia of the Modern World. The Encyclopedia will be published by Oxford University Press.

Catawba College Resident Assistant Staff Announced
Catawba College’s 2005-2006 academic year is well underway and a number of students have applied and been selected to serve as resident assistants or RAs. According to Dan Sullivan, director of Housing and Residential Life, 24 students are serving as RAs in Catawba’s eight residence halls this year.

Catawba College Professor Participates in Conference
Dr. J. Michael Bitzer, assistant professor of political science at Catawba College, recently participated at the American Political Science Association’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.
Catawba College Librarian Receives Grant to Attend Forum
Keith Engwall, head of systems and technology at the Catawba College Library, has been awarded a 2005-2006 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Career Enrichment Grant for $1000 to attend the 2005 Library Information and Technology Association National Forum. The forum, “The Ubiquitous Web: Personalization, Portability, and Online Collaboration,” is scheduled September 29-October 2 in San Jose, Calf.
Catawba Alumnus Makes Gift to Fund Kinesiology Lab at College
Gene Fuller '52 of Charlotte shrugs off a recent gift he and wife Jane made to fund both a new kinesiology lab and classroom furniture at his alma mater, Catawba College. He simply says, “They needed money and I was able to help.” But the reason for Fuller’s gift is likely a little more complex than that.
Catawba College Holds Opening Convocation
Members of the Catawba College community paused for a moment of silence to recognize the victims of Hurricane Katrina when they gathered for fall convocation Thursday, September 1 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. Then, College President Robert E. Knott officially convened the college for its 154th academic year.
Catawba To Give to Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort
Members of the Catawba College community can assist with the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort simply by making a donation of $10 or more and receiving a specially designed t-shirt. The College residence life staff and bookstore have collaborated in this effort and t-shirts are available in the bookstore and will be available at the football game between Catawba and Livingstone on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Catawba College Cookbooks Available
Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Catawba College have pooled their culinary resources into a new cookbook, “Catawba Cooks.” And now, this collection of 311 favorite recipes is available for purchase in Catawba’s bookstore on campus, with proceeds to benefit on and off-campus service and charitable organizations.
