    Family Continues Tradition of Establishing Scholarships at Catawba College

    Mark Frantz and wife Megan of Arlington, Va. thought a perfect way to celebrate their own first-year wedding anniversary on May 8, 2005 would be to establish a scholarship at Catawba College in honor of Mark’s parents. So, now, there is the Jack and Shirley Frantz Endowed Scholarship, a tribute to both, but especially meaningful to Jack who is a member of Catawba’s class of 1964.

    Catawba College’s Theatre Arts Department continues to be nationally ranked. It is rated fourth in the nation this year, according to the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review’s “The Best 361 Colleges” guide which hit bookstands Tuesday, August 23.

    National President of Republicans for Environmental Protection to Speak

    The national president of Republicans for Environmental Protection will speak at the Catawba College Center for the Environment building on Monday, Sept. 12. Martha Marks, president of REP America, will deliver a presentation entitled “Conservatively Speaking” at 7:15 p.m. in Room 300. A 6:45 reception will precede the program. The event is sponsored by NatureSAFE, a student environmental club, and the Catawba College Political Science Association.

    “My books are U-books,” has been the mantra recently of Dr. Phillip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English and assistant dean of Catawba College. That’s because Acree Cavalier knows that the “U” stands for Ukraine, a place he and family will spend the next 10 months.

    The public is invited to attend the first of Catawba College’s Tuesday Music 515 performances for this fall at 5:15 p.m. September 13, 2005 in the Omwake Dearborn Chapel on campus. This year’s opening performance will feature a duo organ recital by Adam Ward and John Alexander.

    Catawba College’s English Department will sponsor a reading of fiction and poetry by Davidson College professor Alan Michael Parker at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 in the Tom Smith Auditorium of Ketner Hall.

    Catawba College First-Year Students Move In

    More than 200 of Catawba’s first-year students moved into their residence hall rooms on Saturday, August 20 and are participating in an orientation session prior to the first day of classes, August 25. The students and their families were assisted in their move by Alphas, a group of upper class students.

    Professor to Serve as Catawba College Representative to SAC and NCAA

    Catawba College Mathematics Professor Joyce Caddell has agreed to serve as the College’s faculty representative to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In that capacity, she replaces Dr. Karl Hales who retired at the end of the 2004-2005 academic year.

    Catawba College Employee Participates in Theatre Conferences

    Linda Kesler, a staff/adjunct faculty member in Catawba College’s Theatre Arts Department, recently participated in the Alternate Regional Organization of Theatres South Conference. While there, Kesler presented her experimental development process for an original company-developed work, “Where’s My Muffin?” produced last fall in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre.     Catawba College Mathematics Professor Contributes to Textbook Revision

    Dr. John T. Zerger, chair and professor of mathematics at Catawba College, will be recognized for his contribution in helping W.H. Freeman and Company develop a revision plan for a mathematics textbook. Zerger assisted with the revision of the Consortium of Mathematics and Its Applications’ “For All Practical Purposes” textbook. His name will be included in the acknowledgement section of the preface of that textbook.

    Catawba College's Position on NCAA Ruling

    We at Catawba College take very seriously the recent announcement and actions of the NCAA with regard to Native American nicknames and mascots. We disagree strongly with the categorization of Catawba College’s use of “Indians” as “hostile and abusive.” Over the past several years, upon advice and counsel given us by our own alumni who are Native Americans, we have taken steps to assure the appropriate use of the College’s symbols and logos.

    Catawba College President Receives Black Belt

    Catawba College President Dr. Robert Knott became a black belt in karate recently during a rare and special tribute paid to him August 13 by the grandmaster and founder of a Houston-based martial arts establishment.

    Catawba College Professor Issues Challenge

    In September, Catawba College Associate Professor of Management Dr. Andrew Morris will pedal for the 10th year in the Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour and he’s challenging both students and colleagues to either join him or support his efforts.

    Catawba College Hires New Director of Career Services

    Marcia Miller joined the Catawba College community as director of career services on August 1. She had been employed as assistant director of the career development center at Northern Kentucky University since 1995.
