    Workshop at Center for Environment to Examine Town, Rural Development

    An upcoming workshop at the Catawba College Center for the Environment will examine different types of development that spans from towns and their fringes to the more rural areas of the county. Entitled “Conservation Based Development: Providing Community Benefits and Economic Returns,” the workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at the Center facility on the Catawba College campus in Salisbury.

    Western Carolina University Gamelan Ensemble to Perform at Catawba College

    The Catawba College Music Department will host a free concert by the Western Carolina University Gamelan Ensemble at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 18 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. This group will also be performing in local area schools thanks to a grant written by Salisbury’s Susan Trivette.

    Catawba College Theatre Department Presents "The Marriage of Figaro"

    The Catawba Theatre Arts Department presents Beaumarchais’ “The Marriage of Figaro” at 7:30 p.m. April 12-16 in Hedrick Theatre on campus. Its satirical humor focuses on aristocrats, lawyers, pedants and prudes, and its setting, not French as one might expect, but in this production, thoroughly Spanish – set in Barcelona, Spain.

    Catawba College’s Writer-in-Residence to Participate in Poetry Reading

    Dr. Janice Fuller, Catawba College’s writer-in-residence, has been invited by the Writers Group of the Triad to participate in a poetry ready to kick off Poetry Month. She will read from her poetry, along with Fred Chappel and Ann Deagon, at the Green Bean Café in Greensboro at 7 p.m. Monday, April 4. The Dave Fox Trio will also perform that evening, providing jazz interludes

    Catawba College Tennis Teams to Host Benefit Tennis Clinic

    Catawba Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams will host a tennis clinic on Sunday, April 17 at the College’s Johnson Tennis Complex to benefit the Michael Yang Foundation. This foundation, established by Dr. Steve Yang and wife Lori after the death of their two-year-old son, works to help parents deal with the loss of a child.

    Environmental Issues Not Only for Environmental Science Students at Catawba

    Environmental issues are no longer the sole purview of environmental science at Catawba College. Classes in religion and philosophy, economics and political science also offer their perspectives on the relationship between human beings and the environment.

    Forging the Path toward Simplicity - March 22

    The host of the PBS television series “Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska” will offer suggestions for those who seek a solution to the overbooked, stressed-out life on Tuesday, March 22. Wanda Urbanska will speak on “Forging the Path toward Simplicity” at 7:15 p.m. at the Catawba College Center for the Environment facility. Urbanska, who co-produces the series with Frank Levering, notes that living simply is particularly important today because of the stresses in people’s lives.

    Catawba Theatre Department Presents “Exit the King” March 30 – April 2

    Buildings crumble, borders shrink and planets collide – all unmistakable signs that the King is dying and his kingdom is dying with him. This classic play of Absurdist theatre, “Exit the King,” will be presented by the Catawba College Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. March 30- April 2 at the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus.

    Music Department Presents To Sing With the Spirit, A Concert of Choral Music by English Composer John Rutter

    To Sing With the Spirit, a free concert of music by the famous English Composer John Rutter, will be presented by the Catawba College Choral Department at the College’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2005.

    Catawba Music Department Presents “All That Jazz,” a Concert of Popular and Jazz Favorites

    The Catawba College Music Department will present the 11th annual Pops Concert on at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005 in the Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. All That Jazz is a concert of popular, jazz, and swing selections by the Catawba Singers and Madrigals, directed by Rosemary C. Kinard.

    Catawba College Spring Break

    Although Catawba day students, along with many faculty, are away from campus this week, Lifelong Learning and some offices on campus will be open limited hours on March 10-11.

    Catawba College Professor’s Book of Poetry Nominated for Award

    Sex Education, a book of poetry by Catawba College Writer-In-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller, has been nominated for the 2005 Southeastern Booksellers Association (SEBA) Book Award in the poetry category. SEBA is an organization representing independent booksellers in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and Mississippi.

    Catawba Professors Are Active Outside Classroom

    Several Catawba College professors are active in their areas of expertise outside the classroom. Following are details of some of their recent accomplishments and upcoming plans.

    Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame Adds New Members

    Four former student athletes will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on April 2, during the HOF’s 28th annual festivities. The inductees are (with graduation year): James Brown (1974) of Spencer; Angela (Harbour) Mayfield (1993) of Dobson; Mike Warfield of Monaca, Pa. (1991); and posthumously, Thomas J. Ferland (1986) of Webster, N.Y.
