    Noted Author to Speak at Catawba College March 15

    Catawba College’s Lilly Center for Vocation and Values will sponsor two presentations during March by noted author Dr. Sharon Daloz Parks that are free and open to the public.

    Citizens or Consumers? The Re-imagination of Adulthood for a Changing World

    For over 16 years, Dr. Sharon Daloz Parks served as a member of the faculty and a researcher at Harvard University’s Schools of Divinity, Business, and the Kennedy School of Government. She is currently an associate director and member of the faculty at the Whidbey Institute in Clinton, Washington. She is a nationally known author, lecturer, and consultant in the fields of leadership and ethics.

    Classic Arts Duo featured in Catawba College’s Tuesday 515 Music Series

    The Catawba College Tuesday Music 515 performance for March 15, 2005, will feature The Classic Arts Duo – an innovative pairing of violin and classical guitar. The free, 30-minute program will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the Omwake Dearborn Chapel on campus and will include selections by such composers as Telemann and Paganini, plus several original works by Greg Pannell.

    Catawba College Professors Outside the Classroom

    Dr. Paul Baker, a Catawba College mathematics professor, recently made a presentation to the Rowan County Ministerial Association about his mission trips to Russia and Cambodia. He also delivered the sermon at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Kannapolis on Feb. 13, along with the sermon for the 6 p.m. on-campus worship service that same day.

    Catawba College Professor and Two Students Participate in Writing Conference

    Three members of the Catawba College community took part in the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, which took place February 10-12. Two students, who work as tutors at the Catawba College Writing Center, Nneka Campbell of Salisbury, a senior English major, and Charlotte Moore of Alexandria, Va., a junior English major, along with Dr. Aaron Butler, who directs the Writing Center and also tutors, traveled to Charleston and presented a poster session

    Catawba College Trustees Look to New and Improved Residence Halls and Library

    Turning an eye to Catawba College’s future, the College Board of Trustees asked administrators to develop a comprehensive master plan for the institution, with an emphasis on new and improved residence halls. At their annual meeting on campus Tuesday, February 15, trustees also directed officials to proceed quickly with plans to renovate and add space to the library.

    State Math Contest Scheduled at Catawba College

    Catawba College will be a site for the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contests. The Catawba College Mathematics Department will be administering the Algebra I and Geometry tests on Thursday, March 17, 2005. Any student currently enrolled in Algebra I or Geometry may participate.

    Catawba College’s Facilities Department Recognized

    Catawba College’s Facilities Department was recognized Thursday, Feb. 17 during a community meeting held on campus. The department received the third annual Extreme Maintenance Makeover from the MPACT Learning Center in Greensboro in recognition of the challenges it has overcome and the efforts it has made to improve the service component of the department over the past three years.

    Oliver Scott Honored by Catawba College Board of Trustees

    For 24 years, Oliver Scott of Salisbury has planned luncheons, dinners, retreats and other special occasions for the Catawba College Board of Trustees. But on Valentine’s evening, the tables were turned, and trustees honored Oliver during an event held at the home of Mona and Lee Wallace.

    Fowler Family Establishes Scholarship at Catawba College

    Newton and Nancy Fowler of Concord and members of their family have made a gift to Catawba College to establish the Fowler Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student athlete who maintains a 2.75 grade point while majoring in teacher education.

    New Scholarship at Catawba College Pays Tribute to Deceased Alumna

    Dr. Donald E. Fuoss ’47 of Sacramento, California says the scholarship he has established at Catawba College pays tribute to almost 60 years of marriage to his late wife, Frances Arthur Fuoss ’45. Mrs. Fuoss died December 4, 2004 after a six-year battle with colon cancer.

    Catawba College Theatre Students Recognized

    Several students in Catawba College’s nationally ranked theatre arts program have recently been recognized by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for their skill and expertise in several areas of theatre production, including direction and criticism.

    Dollars Add Up to Hundreds for Tsunami Relief

    The monetary denominations broke down like this: 7- 20s, 3 -10s, 22 fives, 350 ones, 249 quarters, 299 dimes, 261 nickels, 1560 pennies, and checks totaling $540. But those denominations added up to a whopping $1,290.80 donated by the Catawba College community to provide aid to victims of the December 26th Asian Tsunami disaster.

    Labeling Deloris Plays NYC

    Several Catawba College students and their band, Labeling Deloris, played a gig at Arlene’s Grocery in New York City in early January. And, while they relished that experience, it simply left them wanting more performance opportunities and a wider audience for their original music.

    ‘Developing Sustainable Rowan’ Presentation at Center for Environment

    The Catawba College Center for the Environment will host a presentation entitled “Developing a Sustainable Rowan” on Tuesday, Feb. 22, as part of its Clean Air/Sustainability Lecture Series.

    Catawba College Music Department Presents Free Piano Concert

    The Catawba College Music Department presents a free concert open to the public with Pianist Jesse Davis at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 5 at Keppel Auditorium in the Robertson College-Community Center.
