John and Patsy Powell Establish Scholarship at Catawba College
Catawba College Alumnus John L. Powell, Jr. ’52 will tell you that he studied a copy of the Catawba College catalog at his Burgaw, N.C. high school for two years as he made plans for his future. Following his high school graduation, after he had applied and was accepted, he loaded his belongings into a trunk, boarded a bus, and traveled to Salisbury to attend Catawba, sight unseen.
Catawba to Host Seminar on Campus Sexual Assault and Problem Drinking
Catawba College will host a two-day seminar addressing campus sexual assault and problem drinking February 16 and 17 in the College’s Center for the Environment. The event is co-sponsored by The National Center for Higher Education Risk Management and The North Carolina Collaborative Alcohol Management Project for University Success (C.A.M.P.U.S.).
Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” Runs February 15-19 at Catawba College
One hundred years ago, Russian playwright Anton Chekhov opened a play intended to be a bittersweet comedy. Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” was his last play, and according to some, his masterpiece.
Catawba College’s Writer-in-Residence Elected to Playwrights Board
Dr. Janice Fuller, Catawba College’s Writer-in-Residence, has been elected a board member for the North Carolina Playwrights Alliance. The mission of the alliance is "to unite and serve playwrights of North Carolina through the promotion and advocacy of playwrights' work and the creation of state, regional, national, and global production and networking opportunities."
Catawba Students Spearhead “Greening” of Campus
“By making small changes, we can make a big difference,” Catawba College Senior Connor Coleman recently told a small gathering of faculty, staff and students. His comment was made at the conclusion of an on-campus presentation concerning student-developed proposals to help “green” Catawba’s campus.
Catawba College Community Rallies to Raise Funds
Simply by eating lunch in the dining hall on campus, Catawba College students managed to raise almost $150 to benefit victims of the Asian tsunami disaster and the California mudslides. The College’s food service provider, Chartwells, agreed to donate to the relief effort 50 cents for every student who ate lunch Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in the dining hall.

In 1994, Ann Campanella began to realize that her mother was behaving strangely. Over the next few years, Alzheimer’s disease rapidly took over her mother’s mind. Friends and family of the late Earl B. and Jane W. Ruth of Salisbury have established an Endowed Scholarship at Catawba College in the couple’s memory. Preference for the scholarship will be given to student athletes, with first preference going to athletes who are majoring in education.

Catawba College’s Tuesday 515 Series Resumes
The Tuesday Music 515 Concert Series resumes for the spring semester at Catawba College on at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2005 in the College’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. This free performance will feature Adam Ward, organist, in a program of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, including his famous “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” the “Gigue Fugue in G major,” and “The Prelude and Fugue in E minor.”
Catawba College Faculty Members Publish and Serve on Task Force
Dr. Maria Vandergriff-Avery, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Catawba College Department of Sociology, recently had an article published. "Resiliency Capacities Among Rural Low-Income Families," was published in the October-December 2004 edition of the journal, Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services.
Peterson Playwright in Town for Workshops at Catawba College
One of the winning playwrights in Catawba College’s Theatre Arts Department’s Peterson Emerging Playwrights Competition will be in town while his play, All of the Above, is workshopped next week at the College. Playwright Tom Sime will be on hand for the public readings of his script and the discussions and open forums which will follow them.
New Email System Launched for Campus
A full-featured email/calendaring system was installed over the holiday break. To get started using it, click on the WEBMAIL icon above (on the front of the Catawba website.) To view an online tutorial about using WEBMAIL, go to the Documents tab in CatLink. Look in your Inbox for an email message from Computer Services with more details about the new system. Students, faculty, and staff now have access to this new e-mail system which is the industry standard.
Catawba College Professor to Speak at Conference
Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor and chair of the political science department at Catawba College, will lecture Saturday, March 5, at the 10th annual Florida Chautauqua Assembly held at the Chautauqua Center in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Silverburg’s lecture is entitled “9/11 to 2/2 and Beyond.”
The Almost Lost Folk Art of Spivey’s Corner Hollerin’
Kevin Jasper remarks that “Hollerin’ in general is done all over the world, but…the Folk Art of Hollerin’ as it is practiced in Southeastern North Carolina’s Sampson County is unique to that area.”
He should know. Jasper has competed in the National Hollerin’ Contest in Spivey’s Corner every year since 1998. Except for his first year of competing, he has placed no lower than first runner up and has won the championship twice, once in 2000 and again in 2004.
