Catawba Hosts Mathematics Association Meeting
The Department of Mathematics at Catawba College recently hosted a meeting on campus of the Mathematics Association of America. Forty-five members from 11 different institutions attended the dinner meeting held November 16.
Designing Our Way to Cleaner Air
Urban designer David Walters will be the featured speaker Monday, Nov. 29, at the Catawba Center for the Environment’s Clean Air Lecture Series.
Walters, who is also an architect, town planner and professor at UNC-Charlotte, will speak at 7:15 p.m. on “Designing Our Way to Cleaner Air.” A 6:45 reception will precede the presentation, which is free and open to the public. It will be held in Room 300 of the Center for the Environment facility on the Catawba College campus.
Catawba College’s Writer-In-Residence Makes News
Catawba College’s Writer-In-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller has had a poem, "For William, Who Lived Twelve Hours" from her book, Sex Education, selected as the poem of the day for November 10 by Verse Daily. The poem was posted on the website--www.versedaily.com.
Catawba College Hosts Annual Endowed Scholarship Luncheon
A capacity crowd was in attendance in Peeler Crystal Lounge Thursday, November 11 when Catawba College hosted its annual Endowed Scholarship Luncheon. The occasion was an opportunity for scholarship donors or donor representatives to meet with their scholarship recipients.
Catawba’s Production, “A New Brain,” May Advance to Regional Festival Competition
Catawba College’s production of the musical comedy, “A New Brain,” is being held for consideration to advance to regional competition, slated February 1-6 at the Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Fla., in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. That after the production was entered and performed in state competition in the North Carolina American College Theatre Festival, hosted Nov. 2-6 at Catawba College.
Catawba College Mathematics Professor Recognized
Dr. John Zerger, a Catawba College associate professor of mathematics and chair of that department, has been selected for inclusion in this year’s edition of the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” This is the fifth year that Zerger has been so recognized.
Center for Environment Partners with Simple Living TV Series
The Catawba College Center for the Environment has entered a partnership with the Simple Living TV Series that will bolster the work of both.
“Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska,” which is produced by Urbanska and Frank Levering for public television stations nationwide, is the first major television series on simplicity. The series focuses on environmental stewardship, thoughtful consumption, community involvement and financial responsibility. Urbanska calls it “a paean to a more meaningful
First Family Donors and Scholars Feted at Catawba College
"It was thanks to my First Family Scholarship that I was able to enjoy a truly life-changing experience at Catawba College, both inside and outside the classroom, " Senior Katie Phelps of Prince Frederick, Md., said at the annual First Family Scholarship Luncheon held Oct. 27. She spoke on behalf of her fellow scholars at the event held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.
Students Receive Research Grants
Four Catawba College students have received grants from the Beta Beta Beta Research Foundation to support their senior research.
Theatre Department Presents "The Cradle Will Rock"
The Catawba College Theatre Department will present Mark Blitzstein’s musical, "The Cradle Will Rock," November 16-20 in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus. Performances will be offered each of those evenings at 7:30 p.m., along with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Nov. 20th.
Residence Life Staff Sponsor Duck Draw
Thanks to a Duck Draw Community Service Fundraiser sponsored by Catawba College’s Residence Life Staff some needy area families will be able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The fundraiser, which kicked off October 26 and runs through November 12, allows participants to sponsor a duck for just $1.
Students Raise $700 for Rowan County Special Olympics
Catawba College students raised almost $700 for the Rowan County Special Olympics during their "Keep It Rockin’ " fundraiser held on campus October 23-30. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored the weeklong event in the Cannon Student Center on campus.
Fallout 2004 Concert November 11th
The Catawba College Vernaculars and Jazz Nucleus will present a joint concert on Thursday, November 11th at 7:30 pm. Fallout 2004 will feature the songs of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder in addition to well-known jazz and blues works. The event, to be held in the Hedrick Little Theatre on the Catawba campus (Salisbury, North Carolina), is free and open to the public.
Music Department to Present Annual Services of Lessons and Carols
The Catawba College Department of Music will present its seventeenth annual Christmas Choral Concert, A Service of Lessons and Carols, Tuesday and Thursday, November 30 and December 2, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. In recent years, both performances have played to full houses due to the high level of community interest.
