Tuesday 515 Series to Feature Catawba Chorale and Handbells
The public is invited to the third in the Catawba College Tuesday Music 515 performances for this fall, at 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The program will feature music for handbells and choir by such composers as Praetorius, Bach, and Handel.
See 23 Plays Within One Week
Salisbury area residents could attend 23 plays and see many rising stars within just one week if they had the time. They’ll have that opportunity November 2 through 6 thanks to two North Carolina theatre festivals and a state theatre conference being hosted by Catawba College and a community theatre festival hosted by Piedmont Players. All of the festivals’ productions are open to the public and although admission is free, a donation of $5 per performance is suggested.
Announcing Football Games Is a Sideline for Two Catawba College Professors
Two of Catawba College’s faculty members use their voices for reasons other than lecturing. Dr. Karl Hales has been announcing the Catawba football games on the stadium public address system for 25 consecutive years and Dr. Tim Moreland has handled radio play-by-play for the East Carolina University Pirates Football network for 11 years. Some may see their part-time jobs as hobbies, but these two colleagues see it as an extension of their profession.
Catawba College President Makes Case for Increasing College Endowment
Catawba College President Dr. Robert Knott emphasized the importance of significantly growing the College’s endowment if Catawba is to be successful in its goal of becoming a more selective institution. Knott told College trustees gathered for their semi-annual meeting that in the intensely competitive marketplace for academically talented students a strong endowment allows an institution to both attract and retain those students.

In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark
Bethany and Aidan Sinnott suspended time for six weeks this summer and traveled in the footsteps of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was the Sinnotts’ way to mark the 200th anniversary of those explorers’ trek across the continental United States and, at times during their trip, to actually see what the explorers saw when viewing some of the same vistas.
Aidan, inspired with his recent reading of Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage, suggested the trip.
Field Sketching Workshop Offered at Catawba Center for Environment
The Catawba College Center for the Environment will offer a Field Sketching Workshop with illustrator David Williams on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Center for the Environment building and the Catawba Ecological Preserve, the workshop will enhance participants’ observation skills, introducing them to current and historical field sketching. Catawba College Students Get Halloween Treat Bags to Promote Alcohol Awareness
Just a day or so before Halloween, Catawba College students will be treated to bags that Residence Life staffers hope will help keep them safe and alcohol aware during the ghoulish weekend.

Rockwell Couple Establishes Scholarship at Catawba College
Jack and Jackie Taylor of Rockwell have established a scholarship at Catawba College. It will provide financial assistance to a student-athlete from Rowan County who is a member of the College baseball team and who demonstrates both ability and financial need. The Taylors are both Catawba College alumni.
Catawba College Students Rock for Special Olympics
Catawba College students will literally be rocking for Special Olympics October 23-30. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will sponsor a “Keep It Rockin’ ” fundraiser in the Cannon Student Center on campus to benefit the Rowan County Special Olympics.
Former Catawba Basketball Player, Now Collegiate Coach Establishes Scholarship at College
Catawba College Alumnus Cy Alexander ’75 admits that he has a little less hair and weighs a little more than he did when he played basketball for the Indians three decades ago. But this player turned collegiate coach has not lost his passion for his alma mater or the memories of the life lessons he learned on Catawba’s campus.

Catawba College Students Participate in Students of North Carolina Association of Educators’ Pinning Ceremony
Twenty Catawba College students participated in a Students of North Carolina Association of Educators’ (SNCAE) Pinning Ceremony October 12 in Tom Smith Auditorium. Rowan-Salisbury Teacher of the Year for 2004-05, Teresa Crawley, was the guest speaker for the event.
Catawba College Faculty Member to Participate in CIC Planning Meeting
Dr. Cynthia Osterhus, an assistant professor of teacher education at Catawba College, has been selected to participate in a planning meeting to design a national project on the effective use of the Internet in the pre- service training of K-12 teachers. The meeting, organized by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), will be held December 2-3 at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

Dr. Maria Vandergriff-Avery can’t wait to take her students to Floyd – Floyd, Virginia that is. Two Catawba Grads Tapped As Distinguished Alumni During Homecoming Weekend
Two graduates of Catawba College were recognized as Distinguished Alumni Saturday, Oct. 9 during the College’s Homecoming Weekend activities. Their award presentations occurred during a noon barbecue luncheon for alumni held in the Goodman Gymnasium prior to the College’s football game against Wingate University.

High Demand Expected for Tickets to Catawba vs Carson Newman Game
Due to the expected demand of tickets for the Carson Newman-Catawba football game on October 30, tickets will be sold in advance, beginning October 7 and will be on sale every weekday from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. General Admission tickets may be purchased by phone (704.637.4474) using a credit card (MC & VISA) or in person at the Catawba College ticket office in gymnasium at a cost of $10. No tickets will be held without payment.
Food Lion Joins Sponsors for Oct. 8th Jen Chapin Concert
Food Lion has signed on as a sponsor of this week’s free Salisbury concert by performing songwriter and Hybrid Recordings artist Jen Chapin to be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, October 8th in Catawba College’s Keppel Auditorium. In keeping with Chapin’s work as president of World Hunger Year and founder of Artists Against Hunger and Poverty, Food Lion’s sponsorship will take the form of a nonperishable food donation to Rowan Helping Ministries.
Catawba College Tuesday 515 Series presents Moravian Music on October 12
The public is invited to attend the second in the Catawba College Tuesday Music 515 performances for this fall, at 5:15 p.m. October 12, 2004, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The program will feature Moravian vocal and choral music with Patsy Parnell and Kathryn Terry, sopranos; Rosemary Kinard, alto; Karl Kinard and Norman Sloop, tenors; and Ralph Hair, bass. Robert Durocher, Jr., will accompany the group on organ.
Rowan County Students Benefit from Ketner Scholarships at Catawba College
The scholarships provided by Ralph W. Ketner and his wife, Anne enabled 115 Rowan County students to attend Catawba College this academic year. Many of those students attended a luncheon held Thursday, Sept. 30 in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus and shared their appreciation directly with the couple.
