PhotoKrispy Kreme Chairman, President and CEO James Morgan Speaks at Ketner School of Business Distinguished CEO Lecture Series (Sweet!)
With a warm and engaging manner, Morgan made it clear that he was very happy to be speaking to a gathering of college students on a campus near his Winston-Salem based company. He quipped that he had a Plan A and a Plan B in place for his visit. Plan A, he said, was that the students "will remember something from what I say," and Plan B was that they would remember him as "the guy who brought the doughnuts."

Reservations for tickets to the Service of Lessons & Carols will be accepted beginning Monday, November 7th. To reserve your tickets, call (704) 637-4396 (maximum of 4 tickets per person for the public performance on Thursday, December 1). Tickets are free, but reservations are required.

Of the 2,500 four-year colleges in the United States, Catawba has been ranked among "The Best 376 Colleges" by the prestigious Princeton Review in its 2012 annual college guide. This places Catawba among the top 15 percent of American colleges. The Princeton Review's "The Best 376 Colleges" annual college guide was available on newsstands August 2. Only about 15% of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and three colleges outside the U.S.A. are profiled in the book.

Catawba College continues to be ranked as one of the nation's Best Regional Colleges, according to the 2012 edition of "Best Colleges," published by U.S.News & World Report and released September 13. Catawba ranked 16th among 99 of these Best Regional Colleges in the South.

Catawba is one of only 20 North Carolina public and private institutions included in Forbes' "America's Top Colleges 2011," and is ranked 476 among the 650 best undergraduate colleges. The Forbes' rankings were prepared by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C. think tank founded by Ohio University economist Richard Vedder. In recognition of its 2010-2011 activities, Catawba College's Chapter of the American Chemical Society has received an Honorable Mention Chapter Award from the American Chemical Society. Catawba's chapter will be recognized in the November/December issue of "In Chemistry" magazine and at the ACS Student Chapter Award Ceremony to be held in conjunction with the 243rd ACS National Meeting in San Diego, Calif.

PhotoCatawba Nets Metrolina Theatre Association Awards & Nominations
Past and present members of the Catawba College Theatre Arts Department — students, alumni and faculty — were winners in the 2010-2011 season of Metrolina Theatre Awards. The awards were presented at the Metrolina Theatre Association's 8th annual Gala on Sunday, October 9 at the Omni Charlotte Hotel at 132 East Trade Street in downtown Charlotte. Members of Catawba's Theatre Arts Department received 29 nominations and eight awards.

Photo"My Summer of Service:" Sixteen Lilly Center Summer Interns Placed with Nonprofits
During the summer of 2011, the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values at Catawba College provided funding and facilitated the placement of 16 students as interns in the nonprofit sector. On September 15, the interns came together in Tom Smith Auditorium on campus to share highlights from their summer experiences. The evening's program was entitled "My Summer of Service."

Meet Four New Faculty Members
One is a Toastmaster and has authored four books, including one entitled, "Cows Are People Too: Lessons from Someone Out Standing in the Field." One signed his employment contract in Borneo and left his job at the Smithsonian Institution to come to Catawba College. Another is a nationally certified athletic trainer with a keen personal interest in motorsports. Then, there is one who can solve a Rubik's Cube in just two minutes and is interested in studying the sociology of religion.

Ralph W. Ketner, founder and chairman emeritus of Food Lion, Inc., celebrated his 91st birthday Tuesday, Sept. 20 with some help from his colleagues at Catawba College. Ketner was surprised with flowers and an array of refreshments in the conference room of Ketner Hall on campus.
