Colum McCann

Author Colum McCann, winner of the 2009 National Book Award for his novel, "Let the Great World Spin," will be the featured speaker at the 25th annual Brady Author's Symposium scheduled Thursday, March 3, 2011. Reservations are required for the Symposium, which is open to the public. Reservations must be made by February 25th by contacting the College's Public Relations Department, 704-637-4393.

Catawba College has produced and will air several television commercials in select cable markets during the first quarter of this year. The 30-second commercials, which feature Catawba students as talent, will run during select programs on the cable systems serving Lancaster, Lebanon, York and Harrisburg, Pa., Roanoke, Va., and Jacksonville, Fla., markets.

The 2011 Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame is set for April 29-30!

  • Friday, April 29th - 1:00pm Shotgun Start Golf Tournament and Cookout (Country Club of Salisbury).
  • Saturday, April 30th - 12noon Induction Ceremony in Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gymnasium.

The 2011 inductees are: Tony DiPaolo '59 (Football); Lonnie Chandler '63 (Women's High School Basketball Coach); Dwayne Brewington '82 (Basketball); Monté Turner '94 (Women's Basketball and Volleyball)

In Salisbury, Five Catawba Folks Named Among "Ten to Watch"
In a recent article titled "The Top Ten to Watch in 2011" in the local newspaper, The Salisbury Post, Catawba College connections fill half the list:

  • Kevin Auten '00 is Rowan County's sheriff.
  • On Jan. 3, Brandy Cook '98 was sworn in as Rowan County's first female district attorney.
  • Chad Mitchell '98 is a Rowan County commissioner.
  • Robert Van Geons '97 is executive director of RowanWorks, the county's economic development commission.
  • Dr. David Fish is associate professor of music and chair of the music department at Catawba.

PhotosProfessor Practicing What She Teaches in a "Promising" Enterprise
Catawba College Business Professor Pam Thompson is betting you can make a promise and stick to it while "making the world a better place one promise at a time." Thompson is launching a business venture that depends on people making a promise and going public with that promise with a bracelet and social networking. She has spent most of the last three months "learning about starting a product-based business rather than just teaching about it." Thompson is including Catawba business students in some of the real-world decisions and steps involved in the process.

It's A Brand New Term: J-Term
One hundred and sixteen students took online classes or traveled abroad during Catawba's winter term this year. Enrollment in the "J term," as the December-January time that coincides with Christmas break is known as on campus, doubled since it was initially offered in 2009-2010, and so did the courses offered during the period.
