The Education Summit
by Philip Russ '10

RigsbeeWhat does Education, Technology, Orange People, Pencil Darts, ABC News, and National Teacher of the Year Finalist mean? Well of course there is only a single name that comes to mind, Mrs. Cindi Rigsbee, AT&T's 2008-2009 North Carolina Teacher Of the Year. She met with West Scholars in the Tom Smith Auditorium this morning, discussing her path in education and technology in her seminar titled "Making Connections as a Teacher." Mrs. Rigsbee with her great personality and sense of humor used several personal experiences to share her joy for teaching. I felt the true passion coming from her words as she discussed her moment when teaching went from pastime to passion in her life. She put us in several situations in which we could relate to when we were in middle school. She shared how she was able to creatively tie the term "Dreams" into her lesson plans and classroom since each teacher is indeed a dream maker for children.

Ritchie and OsterhusSeveral influential faculty and staff members were attendance at this special presentation as well as the lunch that followed. A special guest was Dr. Shirley Ritchie, the educator for whom the Academy for Teaching is named.

I came out of this experience with a new perspective on education with new creative philosophies and ideas on how to reach my students in my very on classroom. This was a very beneficial and well appreciated event that I was able to be a part of courtesy of the Shirley Peeler Ritchie Academy for Teaching.
