Joe Ehrmann's Visit to Catawba Touches Lives of Students
by Philip Russ '10

Ehrmann at CatawbaWhat does it mean to be a true "Man" and a true "Woman"? Who would ever guess that the answer behind this question could be answered by a former NFL Pro Bowl defensive lineman from the Baltimore Colts. Who is this Man?

Joe Ehrmann visited the campus of Catawba College and spoke to the faculty and students on how to live out the true meaning of being called a Man and Woman. But first one might ask just who and why is this football player talking to students and highly educated professors?

Ehrmann at CatawbaWell, Mr. Ehrmann is an inspirational and dynamic speaker, who works with organizations and associations to promote growth, teamwork, effectiveness and individual responsibility. As an educator, motivator, professional speaker, minister, and coach for over 25 years, Joe is a champion of causes, change and compassion. Whether through seminars or sermons, Joe conveys his unique heartfelt messages with a passionate delivery that inspires introspection and action. A book written about Mr. Ehrmann in 2004 by Jeffrey Marx, "Season of Life," has sold over a million hard copies.

Mr. Ehrmann brings to life in his talks the path in which he traveled down as a professional athlete. This seminar and presentation was outstanding and related to everyone in the room. I felt as if I had known him my whole life because he shared with us some very personal experiences which had changed him physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Ehrmann at LunchI also was honored and privileged to sit with Mr. Ehrmann over lunch. He shared with me his insights as a past football player and current coach, his strategies on how to be a man of faith on the field of competition. This was personally influential to me as well as my teammate Grayson Downs, who also plays football here at Catawba. I gained some very important tips that will help me in my life and in relationships not only here as student-athlete, but also as a Christian.
