Kathi Welborn in the Health Center has notified me that two students are currently being treated after presenting flu like symptoms today. As reported previously, The rapid flu test we use in the health Center has a very low sensitivity for H1N1 and is not reliable for diagnosis. Recommendations from the CDC and Health Department are to isolate a student in their room, hand washing, wearing a mask, and no class until 24 hours fever free without Tylenol or Ibuprofen. The students have been given this information and advised to follow the steps outlined. The nurses have notified class professors and will continue to monitor the students over the next few days.
Students are reminded that the Health Center serves as the clearing house for notifying professors of documented illnesses. Faulty, staff and students should contact Kathi Welborn or Candy Fesperman to report or refer students with influenza like symptoms for treatment immediately.
I want to remind everyone to take the necessary precautions for influenza prevention. Please contact the Health Center if you have questions or for additional information relating to flu illnesses.
