Write Your Own Future Story with a Degree in English

Catawba College’s English department offers a variety of courses in literature, creative writing, technical writing, and rhetoric. A degree from our program will teach you how to think critically, read analytically, and communicate effectively, gaining the skills necessary to compete in multiple career fields.

The English department offers several avenues for students to learn to read critically and to write persuasively. We also connect students to a number of internships that help connect strong communication skills and real-world problems.

All English majors take core classes on literature and language. From there, majors choose a concentration in literature, creative writing, or public and professional writing. All majors complete 39-40 total hours of course work.

During your academic career, the department has many opportunities for you to enhance your analytical and composition skills. These include taking a travel course, signing up for a work study, completing an internship, being a research assistant, publishing The Arrowhead, and working in the Writing Center.
