A native of Aiken, S.C., Smith earned his undergraduate degree in exercise science and his master's degree in higher education and student affairs from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. He has worked as an academic enrichment coordinator for residence life for several years at his previous institution. Prior to that, he worked as the intramural coordinator and senior exercise specialist in USC-Aiken's Wellness Center.
