Jim Epperson, Faculty Emeritus


He has also served on the national Michael Kanin Playwriting Awards Committee and has acted as North Carolina KC/ACTF playwriting chair for the past ten years. During this period, the theatre arts department has hosted the state KC/ACTF festival at Catawba College eight times, as well as the regional (ten state) festival.

Honored by Catawba College for his "sustained leadership excellence in teaching and devotion to the college," Epperson was appointed as the Jefferson-Pilot Professor of Theatre in the Spring of 2000. He was also the 1998 recipient of the Herman D. Middleton Service Award from the North Carolina Theatre Conference, the highest award given to a North Carolina theatre professional. While the North Carolina Theatre Conference awarded the Catawba theatre arts department the Outstanding Service Contribution to North Carolina Theatre Award in 1996. Epperson's work with the North Carolina Theatre Conference has included serving on their Board for a number of years while holding the positions of president, first vice-president, and chair of playwriting. He was also elected to the position of Southeastern Theatre Conference college and university chair, serving on the Board of that organization as well.

Epperson's primary theatre specialty is directing. He has directed over sixty college and university productions and heads up the B.F.A. directing program at Catawba. While the range of productions directed reach from modern American dramas such as Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Agnes of God, and Grapes of Wrath, to the European successes of Harold Pinter and Vaclav Havel, and then on to musicals such as Chicago, A Chorus Line, Fiddler on the Roof, and A Little Night Music.

The Peterson Playwriting Series brings playwrights to campus so as to assist them in the development of scripts that then receive their world premiere at Catawba. A few of the successful plays that have gone on to professional productions that Epperson has directed and helped develop are China Doll, Catfish Moon, Blessed Assurance and Interior Lines. Additionally, a number of Epperson's directing and playwriting students have won regional and national playwriting and directing competitions.

Epperson is married, has two grown children, and is a proud grandparent. His hobbies include film, basketball, canoeing, reading for pleasure, and running.
