The first cohort of 14 West Scholars entered Catawba College as first-year students in the fall of the 2008-2009 academic year. These students, who came to Catawba from both inside and outside of the State of North Carolina demonstrated leadership, community involvement and a strong commitment to teaching. Each of them also completed a special application for this scholarship program.

The West Teaching Scholars are so designated in honor of Catawba College alumna, College trustee and former Teacher Education faculty member, Dr. Martha Kirkland West of Salisbury, N.C.

Catawba’s West Scholars enjoy:

• A $13,000 ($15,000 for N.C. residents) educational scholarship for qualified Teaching Scholars. Included in the West Scholars tuition award are all academic tuition awards provided by Catawba as well as the NCLTG state grant.
