The Shirley Ritchie Academy for Teaching is an entity that enriches the Teacher Education program for all students who choose Catawba College for their teacher preparation. The Academy for Teaching, established in 2007 and named for Catawba College alumna, trustee and former Teacher Education faculty member, Dr. Shirley Peeler Ritchie of Salisbury, N.C., focuses on equipping its participants with 21st Century teaching skills. It is the home of two different scholarship programs for students committed to pursuing careers in teaching, Catawba's N.C. Teaching Fellows and Catawba's West Scholars.
